AP wants to play for the Steelers

Adrian Peterson wants to play for the Steelers.

Hmm... his stats aren’t half bad (600 yards, 7 TDs, 3.9 per carry) when playing for a bad team. In NO WAY would he be a starter, but as a backup, he’d be better than what we currently have.

Side-note: I have averred for a decade that if we had traded our ENTIRE 2008 set of draft picks to acquire AP in the 2007 draft, we would have won three Super Bowls in four years (2007, 2008, 2010... 2009 still would have been a nightmare ).

I would be fine signing him, drafting (Harris or Etienne) RB and cutting Snell and Samuels.

The funny thing is I have heard multiple free agents over the last few years express verbal interest in the Steelers and the Steelers ended up signing none of them. I honestly just don't know why you spend salary cap money on someone who is aging other than attention for signing the namebrand

    AP: $1,050,000 ... 600 yards
    Samuels: $920,000 ... 28 yards
    McFarland: $780,000 ... 113 yards

I’d be fine with AP on a Vet deal with incentives.

Not just about cap relative to yards in 2020. 600 yards and 3.9 YPC are career lows for him when playing at least 12 games. He's on a downward trajectory. Get someone who's not past his prime

To be clear: I’m not sold on AP. But, my point is still the same: AP for the vet minimum IS better than who we currently have.

For the cost of Snell, McFarland, and Samuels ($2,550,000) you could indeed get a decent vet. Jones isn’t coming here for that little; neither is Chris Carson. Duke Johnson... maybe? Marlon Mack??? Kenyon Drake???

AP wants to be on any team he thinks he has a chance to start and pad his stats. That said I'm okay with him being a Steeler. Sign him and then draft a rb in the 1st.

Why? He’s in decline. He’s useless in the passing game, so he’s a dead give away when on the field. He will cost actual money to sign. And he’s a crappy person to boot. With all the Tyreek Hill angst, why give AP a pass?

Agreed, away with these antiques. I mean AP is older than me.

Completely agree for all the reasons you mention.

    No thank you.

It's ALL about the price. IF AP wants to play another year, is willing to be the backup for backup pay, I'm willing to do it.

    1. Yes he's an older, declining RB.
    2. I disagree he is useless in the passing game though.
    3. As with every FA we discuss the cost is going to be the primary factor.
    4. I have no idea what the rest of this post is referring to. The spanking incident?

It was a bit more than a spanking. AP beat his small son battered, bruised, and bloody with a tree branch. Hill beat his young son until he broke a bone with a belt. Both seem to be not nice folks.

But everyone "likes" AP, so it got excused. People don't like Hill so he doesn't get a pass.

Either way, if I go by several statements made on this board about a variety of players over the last few years...AP should be "off the board" for those same Steelers fans.

OK. That's what I thought you were referring to. And it's cool if you think AP was WAY out of line, many people do. The very big difference to my view is AP spanked his son with a switch, not beat him with a tree branch, that is ridiculous to say that. AP was disciplining his son the way most people I know were by their parents. It was a spanking, not a child beating. I agree with the ethical concerns and my own personal view on spanking with a switch or a belt has changed. But the mindset behind the discipline remains the same. Hill maybe did not mean what happened as well while disciplining his son. The difference to me, and it's a big difference in my mind, was he later choked his baby's mama and said 'they should be afraid of him'. That is a different mindset all together. One is I'm disciplining my child so he doesn't do something again, the other is be afraid of crossing me because I will hurt you.

Maybe people like us looking from the outside can only compare these incidents from our own experiences and judge them accordingly. I see a very big difference, maybe you see zero difference. As far as I know AP changed how he disciplines after that. Discipline is a part of raising children too.

Discipline is important. I was raised in a household that employed spanking. No big deal.

A switch in this case was a piece of a tree (at least the version I saw reported it that way). And AP beat his kid until he was battered and bloody. I know tons of people that were spanked. With a variety of items. None were beaten until they bled. That crosses a line. Mileage may vary.

Hill choked his kid's mom first. Then he broke his son's arm. Then he said they both should be afraid of him. Not that it changes anything. All is pretty awful and does not paint a good picture. Supposedly Hill has also changed his ways. At least the Chiefs claim that as loudly as possible. Especially when people start talking about Hill and Kareem Hunt in the same sentence!

AP may have changed his methods. He may not have. I actually don't care. I really don't. I also don't really care about Hill either.

I just think that in general, fans make up their minds about a player and then slot the off-field stuff in to fit their already formed opinions on a player.

Like I grew up really really liking Greg Lloyd. I have actively attempted to forget/ignore how incredibly awful and, in my mind, abusive he was to his kid(s).

Yes a switch is from a tree or bush. But you know the difference between whipping with a switch and beating with a tree branch. 2 very different things.

I no longer condone discipline in that manner either. When I was younger and had young children I disciplined them differently than I was as a child. Mainly because of my wife. But the intent when disciplining was still to discipline.

I stand corrected then on the order of events on Hill. I honestly hope he has had a change of heart. But the intent behind choking someone and telling them to be afraid still falls into a different category than how you discipline a child. At least from my point of view.

I don't know the greg Lloyd story.

The lines between all of these are fuzzy. For some discipline and fear are basically the same thing. As long as you are more afraid of the authority figure than you are enticed by the transgression that would bring punishment, you most likely stay in line. And you are totally right, we don't know how any of these events actually went down. We just know what we hear in the news/internet.

I have always felt that AP got more of a pass in the court of public opinion because he was an already established "star" and people had already decided to like him. In contrast, Hill was tarnished before anyone had really heard of him in the NFL...so it was far easier to just write him off. I am not advocating rooting for Hill or not rooting for AP...just these kinds of things have always intrigued me in the extreme and passionate fan reaction to them. Another example is that Ray Lewis is in the HOF and Rae Carruth went to jail. Both are almost certainly heavily responsible for another person being murdered. Anyways...

So Greg Lloyd likes to pull guns on his wife and son: https://www.11alive.com/article/news...t/85-589616850

"In 2001, Lloyd was accused of sticking a gun in his teenage son's mouth after the teen brought home some bad grades."

Maybe AP did get more of a 'break' from public opinion. I always felt most people knew his intent even if they disagree with his tactics. Intent goes a long way with most people, I find. The intent behind putting your hand around someone's throat or putting a gun in someone's mouth is different, and much more alarming to most people. Or maybe it is all about football.

Besides all that ethical dilemma, I would bring AP into the RB room. Cost being EVERYTHING. He's still an upgrade over Snell who is probably RB1 at this moment.
