Tomlin Explains Why Claypool Has Had Snap Count Reduced

One of the top questions I’ve gotten from Steelers’ Nation the past two weeks has been – where is Chase Claypool? The rookie sensation, just one touchdown shy of tying the rookie team record for touchdowns, has been an afterthought the past two weeks. Both losses by an offense struggling to sustain and finish drive.

So their plan of excusing themselves for not involving the team's biggest offensive deep threat and most prolific offensive scorer on an offense that has been stuffed while primarily using really short passes and nosedives up the middle is to say they are reducing his snap count and then use the rookie wall card.

I'm gonna guess that Tomlin isn't going to have a press conference to say that the franchise first ballot HOF QB is old and broken down and can't hit the rookie WR over 10 yards downfield.

Enough already! If Ben truly has a lower body injury that is a very real explanation for why he is struggling going deep. I've seen nothing wrong with his delivery so I expect it's more of a pass rush issue than bad QB issue.

What I just don't get is why you would limit snaps to your best WR because you think he may hit the rookie wall?

I remember early in the season Keyshawn Johnson said all rookies hit the rookie wall eventually just purely because of the increase in games and snaps played. They were talking about Claypool's 4 TD game the week after it happened. According to Keyshawn it's just a matter of when. So take that as you will but maybe the coaches buy into that philosophy as well. ???

I wonder when Luke Kuechly, Aaron Donald, Marcus Peters, Joey Bosa, Marshon Lattimore, and Nick Boas hit that wall? I guess in the off season? I'm not saying it's not a real thing or that Tomlin is wrong for buying into it. I just don't believe every rookie experiences it.

Just read this on Aaron Donald.

In the second half of the season he earned a higher grade and played more snaps than he did in his first eight weeks, breaking through rather than hitting the rookie wall.

This is nothing new. Tomlin does this every season. Not just with rookies...he does it with veterans. James Conner for instance. Not that it helped keep Conner healthy...but it’s why he would take him out for series at multiple times and then lean on him heavy at the end.

You read Tomlin like a book. Something is up with Ben's arm. It could be too many passes lately.
