Unfortunately, some will keep giving fichtner a pass and blame qb play as long as fichtner is around even though the offense is literally better when ben is making things up on offense on the fly.

    Can't it be both?

    Sometimes it’s the combination.

It could be a combination - Ben could be hurt (knee) or his arm is shot! Early in the season, we saw an entirely different offence - a really good one! I think Canada greatly influenced the offence. Then, something changed - the play calling got even more conservative and stale as shit, telegraphing the play itself with formation. Ben seemed to take over and played sandlot ball to secure a couple wins. Unfortunately, we haven't seen that Ben since. I can only surmise that the FO didn't like the players coming out and saying that Ben was drawing up plays in the dirt as it made their dumb ass OC look like the POS he was, so Ben's keys were taken away and was told to run the play RF calls! Hence, you see the shit storm our offence is in right now. I don't think RF liked Canada's influence either. Things aren't working on the offensive side of the ball for whatever reason, but my money is on RF.

Of course a combination of both would require some on here to admit Fichtner is part of the problem instead of pinning everything on the players while Fichtner goes blame free. I personally think a lot of things are to blame for the offensive failures. The O-line can't block (especially run block), the receivers most often targeted couldn't catch COVID in a PA nursing home, Ben is declining and breaking down, and Fichtner's failure at playcalling and offensive design is a large part of the problem. What we saw the last 2 weeks is Fichtner's idea of offense (a term that should be used very loosely), Ben just might not have the ability to bail him out

    Indeed
As with most things in life, it’s not simply one factor.

    1. Ben’s knee
    2. Fitchner calling east-west run plays
    3. Conner injured
    4. Fitchner obsessed with WR screens
    5. DeCastro playing injured
    6. Fitchner running the same five plays
    7. Haussensaussen starting on the O-line
    8. Fitchner thinking he’s clever
    9. Receivers dropping an uncanny amount of balls
    10. Fitchner being employed by this team
    11. Boz being injured one game (-4 points)
    12. Did I mention Randy Fitchner sucking?

I want to say that there is some connection there.. but, I’m not smart enough to figure it out. I’ll aak Josh Dobbs to help me create a Venn diagram.

Seems pretty clear backup QB and RB positions were not given as much attention as other positions, and this is starting to be a big problem for the team (specially the running attack) on top of the injuries to the OL (Dotson, DD, Banner).

Assuming Ben doesn’t retire after this year, what do you think of trading for Minshew as a solid back up who could maybe take over if Ben’s arm totally fails at some point next season?

I’d rather not draft a QB in the first round unless we really get someone potentially great. But we’ll have plenty of other needs

As a long term backup? Yes. As Ben's replacement as a starter no. I think he could easily be one of the better backups in the league but I don't see franchise QB material from him

Yeah, that’s what I mean. As a stopgap until we can draft our real QB of the future.

But if Ben retires after this year, maybe they do need to draft a QB number one. It all depends on who falls to us, or who we can move up to get. I’m not really a college football guy so I don’t know how good anyone is who might be available near the bottom of round 1.
