Film Room: How To Make Eric Ebron An Effective Blocker (And How Not To)

Eric Ebron made an impact as a receiver in Week 3 against the Houston Texans, catching the first of hopefully several redzone touchdowns this season. That’s why he was signed. Blocking ability was secondary. But he’s still a Steelers’ tight end, meaning he doesn’t get the luxury of being a glorified receiver who never gets his hands dirty. For him to be a good-enough blocker, the Steelers have to be smart with how they scheme him. While not perfect, they’re finding ways to make it work.

I think this is pretty much it with Ebron. He’ll never be Heath Miller. You can’t put him one on one with Bradley Chubb on a run to that side and expect Ebron to win that match up. That’s just bad play calling.

But as the article says, if you just use his body to chip or get in the way of someone here and there, he can at least be useful. I’ve read that he’s been working on it and hasn’t been a diva or anything. As long as he’s willing to try, his size and strength alone can be used for some purpose as long as you’re never counting on his one on one blocking to win the down.

Ebron is a minus as a blocker, meaning just about an other Tight End is better. One Wide Receivers do a better job than he does in this department.

However he is a tough cover for LB's and DB's. That's his best value.

Instead of trying to make him do what he sucks at, use him where he is best.
