Who'd they release?
Really hope he never enters the starting lineup
for Dangerfield...

If Davis is a starter it will be because of an injury from Fitzpatrick or Edmunds ... Davis can play in 2 positions and at least he is an NFL caliber player, which was maybe not the case with the other backup safety than the steelers had.We don't want to have a player of Kam Kelly's caliber on the field ....

Honestly, this is a solid move. Especially if Riley makes it to the practice squad. While I know that many totally discount Davis, he isn't a terrible safety and he certainly is nothing to sneeze at as a 3rd safety.
This moves from a position of no depth to legitimate depth.
Wonder what that means for comp picks?
The Safety position keeps getting more intriguing. Looks like Fitz/Riley and then a Edmunds/Dangerfield/Allen/Davis cluster on the other side. The Maryland kid probably makes the PS as well. CBs have a solid Haden/Nelson/Hilton/Sutton with developmental Layne and Pierre. The back end of this defense has gotten fun.
Really like Davis as a #3 safety. Could be terrific in that role.
Honestly this looks like a bad sign for the safety depth they have when they decide to go back to a guy who got repeatedly burned for multiple years. Honestly may have been better to role with the 6th round rookie than bring back a guy with a history of getting burned. The fact that the redskins promptly released him isn't much better
We all knew that the depth at this position was awful but who would you have preferred for the 3rd safety if we consider the salaries and the importance of knowing the system?
No way that Brooks would have been better .... he might have been bad like Kam Kelly who would have been panic for the steelers if the steelers would have an injury at that position
I know this is a very sample size, but this article in the last april show the difference between Davis and a player who was not a NFL caliber player in Kam Kelly
https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.co...t-dolphins-nflWith Sean Davis hurt or out in the first two weeks, the Steelers gave up 54 points on 15 drives, but only 7 points on 7 drives with Davis healthy.
so,it was 48 points in the others 8 drives
Just show that yes,Davis is not very good, but at least he is a NFL caliber player who was maybe not the case for the others backup safety of the steelers.
He knows the system. Very hard with the rules and restrictions this season to get a guy off the street up to speed. Davis is a legitimate NFL player. Dangerfield and Kam Kelly were/are not. Marcus Allen is almost certainly not - at least when it comes to playing deep safety. Riley might be, but likely not really.
Is Davis a great playmaker who elevates those around him? No. Does Davis know the system - yes, have the athletic ability to appear to belong on an NFL field - yes, and perform as a league average "3rd safety" -- almost certainly.
Unless they are paying him some salary cap wrecking amount...this is a can't lose kinda scenario for them.
The good: our third string safety knows the system and has plenty of experience as a starter.
The bad: a former second round pick returns to be a third string safety.![]()
Superbowl!
biggest issue with Davis was this IMO....
no defined role for a long enough period ...
nickle /dime backer /corner /SS/FS
I always thought he would be a better FS than a SS based on his coverage ability from college , BUT he wasnt ... his open field tackling was a disaster and he was late to diagnose ...
he was actually a decent SS his tackling was much better coming downhill to the LOS than it was in the open field vs more elusive players ...
for me he isnt any worse than Edmund's , they are both up-gradable for sure so I like the move you are getting a guy who isnt really worse than your starter for a small contract
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar
I love that they brought him back. He's a quality player that knows the system and can play multiple positions. It's a great depth move. He may see a lot of action in the dime packages due to his versatility.
I hope we don't need him, but having him as depth this way sure beats the hell out of deciding whether or not to pay him $8 million a season because we were stuck.
See you Space Cowboy ...
I realize we know what we have in Davis, obviously coaches do as well. Telling sign about other options. It’s possible playing with Minkah will decrease Davis getting Artie Burned. Kind of like getting Dobbs back IMO, not a game changer but solid increase in depth.
If they were signing past S, the Steelers should have called Donnie Shell.
All Defense!
Just curious if Davis got any action last night? I don't recall seeing or hearing his name? Also curious if Marcus Allen saw any snaps at ILB?
