Steelers open to extending Ben Roethlisberger's deal beyond 2021

Ben Roethlisberger‘s contract goes through the 2021 season. He turns 40 in March 2022.

But the Steelers are open to committing to Roethlisberger as their quarterback beyond 2021 if he’s healthy and willing.

“Obviously after the season we’ll evaluate his contract situation along with other contract decisions we have to make,’’ Steelers president Art Rooney II told Ed Bouchette of TheAthletic.com. “But if Ben feels like playing longer, and it looks like he’s capable of doing it, certainly that would be a great scenario.”

The problem the Steelers face is Roethlisberger is scheduled to count $41.25 million against the salary cap next season. He counts $24 million this season.

No matter what happens, Ben can't have a 41million cap hit next year, even though he's great this year, so the Steelers will have to find a way, maybe do what the Saints have been doing with Drew Brees in the last few years with the voided year and stuff like that.

Seemed like a good spot to drop this article from NFL.com. For those that want to know more how the money gets manipulated. I find it very useful.

If the cap drops as low as everyone is saying, that's a 30 million dollar drop in cap space. 20 million below this year and the roughly 10 million the cap would've gone up. Few teams are structured to weather that. Almost every cap "tool/cheat" ONLY works with a rising cap. What's my point? The NFL and the NFLPA are going to have to work out some "outs" and some "exemptions" or the league will really be rookie contracts, vet minimum salaries, and 2-3 stars per team.

If I ran a team right now; I'd get soft extension terms worked out now and wait and see what the league does to finalize with all my contracts in house.

No way they just simply play 2021 at the floor of $175 million. About 20% of the league will get cut outright to make the cap #s work at the start of the league year.

I hope you are right, since team like the saints have over 70-75 millions over the cap(if the cap is at 175 millions)so this is a killer!

And if the league fails it only has itself to blame. No one wants to watch SJW play football.
