    2020 Roster Prediction Thread

Why not? I have 51 guys that I just can't see not making the roster. That leaves 2 spots up for grabs and I'm not even going to begin to try and figure out a 10 man PS with the current situation making it so abnormal. Like, gotta wonder if teams keep another kicker on the PS...or a 4th QB...basically things no franchise would typically do.

    QB (3)
    Ben R
    Mason R
    Paxton L

    RB (4)
    J. Conner
    B. Snell Jr.
    A. McFarland Jr.
    W. Smallwood

    FB(1)
    D. Watt

    WR (5)
    Juju
    D. Johnson
    J. Washington
    C. Claypool
    D. Cain
    TE(3)
    V. McDonald
    E. Ebron
    Z. Gentry

    OL(9)
    AV
    M. Feiler
    M. Pouncey
    D. Decastro
    Z. Banner
    C. Okorafor
    S. Wisniewski
    K.Dotson
    D. Gray

    DL(6)
    C. Heyward
    S. Tuitt
    T. Alualu
    I. Buggs
    C. Wormley
    C. Davis

    LB (8)

    Watt
    Dupree
    Adeniyi
    Highsmith
    Bush
    VW
    Gilbert III
    Spillane

    DB(9)
    Nelson
    Haden
    Hilton
    Sutton
    Edmunds
    Fitzpatrick
    Layne
    Brooks Jr
    Riley

    Specialists (3)
    Boswell
    Berry
    Long Snapper

    2 Spots up for grabs:
    WR
    Safety
    ILB
    DL

Feel free to tell me what I didn't think of. Still, interesting to think that there are really only 2 spots on the regular roster truly up for grabs. I guess that could expand to more if you look at the "bottom" guy at every position group (like Jaylen Samuels could totally beat out Smallwood or one of the rookie LBs pushes Spillane out...etc).

    Good idea for the thread!

Is this roster is what you would do or what you think the steelers are going to do?

Mostly what I think the Steelers are going to do BUT a little of what I would do. For instance, I wouldn't keep Spillane, but I think the team will. If I was in charge, I would cut Switzer and Dangerfield - but I suspect the team won't. I also think my pick of Davis as the final DL over McCullers is more of what I would do than what the team does. Davis almost certainly goes to the PS and McCullers gets a spot on the 53.

I also hope Cain makes the team.

    Poor Kameron Canaday

    That's his darn name!

I am not sure if Cain will make the team, but they seem really focused on getting someone 6 foot 2+ that can run on the roster. I think counting Cain there are like 4 additions between last year and now (Blacknall, Johnson, Darboh are the others) in that mold. I got to figure one of them makes the roster...

I like your roster but I also think Switzer and Whyte some how get on there as well. One could be at the expense of Smallwood?

I would not be surprised if the steelers keep 6 WR.

Has Tomlin said who will compete for the KR/PR jobs? Is DJ going to be the PR? Lots of questions to be answered. Does Smallwood return kicks or punts?

This is a big mess when you get to the 'final cuts' portion. I think McCullers will be on the 53. I also think there will be a 6th WR, most likely Switzer is the one missing from your list that makes the roster. The 4th OLB spot will come down between Ola and Skipper, IMO. Maybe they keep both and have 5 OLBs to give themselves a better look at Dupree's eventual replacement? Whyte probably sticks on this team if he shows any production at all, he is a ERFA next season. Whyte and Smallwood are basically battling for the same role.

It might come down to who is both eligible and will clear to the PS. This could be an off-season where you can get a "better" player onto your PS. With no traditional preseason, teams might be less willing to take on an unfamiliar to them player.

So maybe a low round draft pick (say Carlos Davis) or a priority UDFA (say like Skipper last year) becomes easier to get through waivers. Meaning that guys like McCullers Switzer, and Dangerfield with viable NFL "Tape" land on the 53.

Be sure that whomever is most qualified will not be doing it...that is the Steelers way...

    Smallwood can return kick...

    But it was in 2016.

I think Whyte was pretty decent in returning kickoffs last season...no?

The defense has become more of a 2 man DL with LBs that move around more than on a traditional 3-4 look as well. A player like McCullers could stick because his role as a situational DL is more of a niche that simply fits him.

I think Switzer stays because Ben seems to have a rapport with him. Not that this makes him a better player but another player that fits a certain niche on this team. This is how I see the role of 3rd RB as well. I think we will have Conner and Snell as the 'bell cow' tandem this season, then either McFarland/Whyte/Smallwood as the situational/change of pace RB that's not meant to see the field for more than maybe 10 plays a game.

The Safety position is intriguing to me. Minkah and Edmunds will likely get the starter roles. Behind them is where it gets sneaky. Riley looks like Minkah's backup moving Marcus Allen off the roster, and Dangerfield backs Edmunds. BUT, Hilton, Sutton, Bandy, and Brooks can change that plan. All 4 of these guys play the Nickel role and can be used at Safety as well. Hilton and Brooks in the box and Sutton and Bandy in a more FS role. If the coaches want more position flexible players, Allen and Dangerfield could be gone. If the coaches want to keep some veteran presence over potential, Dangerfield could still make this team.

Could Switzer's foot injury be serious enough to create a small opening for someone?

lets hope Mr 4ypr doesn't make the team , I mean if some team has room for a high quality waiver he could be their new punt returner

Ray-Ray McCloud has gotten good reports. Returned a kick return for a TD and has done well as a WR. Seems to have the inside track at the #6 WR spot if they decide to carry that number of receivers.

James Pierre is starting to shine

Ray-Ray McCloud snagged a deep ball over Sutton and returned a kickoff the other day to the house ... this kid MIGHT be rising at the right time while Mr Waive is limping around ... could potentially push Switzer off the roster
