Biggest Busts In Steelers History: WR Troy Edwards

New series we’re starting to pass time during the offseason. The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for building through the draft and being one of the league’s best at it. But they aren’t 100%. Their history is riddled with misses, prospects who couldn’t stay healthy, played in the wrong scheme, had off the field issues, or simply weren’t as talented as the team believed.

After looking back on Limas Sweed and Senquez Golson, we move out of the Kevin Colbert era to the year before he arrived. Troy Edwards was one of college football’s most productive players, still holding the record for receiving yards in a game, but the Steelers reached for him and he never lived up to expectations. We go through his career from start to finish.

I'd say that statement was quite exaggerated.

    Agreed. But, negativity gets clicks.

Honestly the whole series..."Biggest Busts in Steelers History" is just a exercise in negativity that is useless. Maybe it feeds the egos of some fans that like to point out how the Steelers ruined their fantasy team with not drafting pro bowlers in all 7 rounds of the draft.

Is Fred Gibson next? maybe Frank Summers?

Sites are dependent on #'s of unique visitors per day so that they can sell ad space. No "new" articles; no new views. I love free NFL/Steelers content as much as the next guy, but these sites are in a bind when there just isn't enough actual news to go around.

I don’t remember much around this time honestly, I was stationed in Japan and had to wake up at 2am to watch football games, and usually they were always shitty Dallas games

Everyone knew that the Steelers were going to draft a WR. No one really discussed any other position (even though John Tait LT would have made a ton of sense), because Cowher was adamant about replenishing his receiving corps.

[NOTE: Draftniks talked about Tait, Javon Kearse (OLB), and Antione Winfield (CB)... but again, the Steelers were locked in on a WR in R1.]

Torry Holt was the receiver that everyone wanted, but no one was delusional enough to even think he’d drop. David Boston was a “possible” target. Troy Edwards had that one good game (much like how Rashard Spinthenfall had that amazing game against USC) which propelled him into R1/convinced the Steelers to draft him. The rest is history.

You mean we can’t have a 74 draft every year?

You really have to stop and think about that...4 HOF’ers in one draft.
