Steelers Among Offenses Most Likely To Run On 2nd And Long

    It’s 2nd and 11.

And the offense runs the football.

It’s a playcall that can infuriate most fans. If you felt that way all too often last year, you’re right. The Pittsburgh Steelers were among the worst offenders in running the ball on 2nd and 10+ doing so 34.1% of the time, 42 of 123 plays. That was tied for 7th most in the league.

Here are the top ten “leaders” in 2nd and long runs in 2019.

    Team
    2nd & 10+ Run Rate
    Minnesota Vikings
    48.3%
    Baltimore Ravens
    41.7%
    New York Jets
    39.8%
    Arizona Cardinals
    37.1%
    Indianapolis Colts
    36.9%
    San Francisco 49ers
    36.7%
    Seattle Seahawks
    34.1%
    Pittsburgh Steelers
    34.1%
    Green Bay Packers
    33.8%
    Buffalo Bills
    33.1%

    …..

Getting Ben Roethlisberger back should solve those issues. Here were their 2nd and 10+ run rate the last three years with Roethlisberger.
    2018 – 23.4%
    2017 – 37.7%
    2016 – 28.8%

Nothing more frustrating to see an offense to run the ball on the 2nd down and 10 or more but of course in 2019 I understand why it was the case .... No excuse for 2017, the last season of Todd Haley as OC too.

Run more vs run less. If only there was some magical number or percentage that proves success. But I guess all teams would have that and it would change again. Alas....

If you want a great offense, running often in 2nd down and 10 or longer is a horrible idea (unless the team is Baltimore, 49ers or team like that) since you are often in 3rd down and long after that.Of course, it can depend on the situation and the score but for a team like Seattle, I don't understand...

What that stat also tells me is the Steelers choose NOT to run on 2nd and long 2/3 of the time. This is such a useless stat. It's all situational football. 2019 is not a very good measuring stick but look at it from a BigBen driven offense. Ben can call a run or pass at the line depending on what he sees from the defense. A third of the time he calls run. So what does that even mean? You really need a complete break-down of each run on 3rd and long, what the defense showed pre-snap, and how successful the run plays were vs those tells. Also, did Haley, Fichtner, or Ben call the run play? High 30% in 2017, then much lower to a quarter of the 3rd and long plays in 2018, as I said throw 2019 out.

They are constantly in second and long because the bullshit first run either goes for one yard or loses two yards. Their first down play calls, in recent years, appear to be garbage...
