    Draft Day Mock

How I think the Steelers will value positions and players.
49: Tee Higgins WR Clemson: I think the Steelers need to get a 'splash playmaker' with this pick. Somebody that will excite the fans for this offense in 2020. Higgins has the size and speed to create mismatches. He can be lined up from anywhere. His route tree needs work but he will most likely be in one on one coverage his rookie season and he can physically beat 1 main most of the time.(If not Higgins will probably be Pittman)
102: Darrell Taylor Edge Tennessee: Not a stellar pass rusher but an Edge defender that can set the edge vs the run. Has elite bend when pass rushing just needs to work on counter moves.
124: John Simpson G Clemson: Has mobility but will probably play the LG position meaning less pulling responsibility. Incredibly strong at the POA. A man mover for the Steelers run game.
135: Tanner Muse SS/ILB Clemson: Yes I know, 3rd Clemson player but this is where what i like meets what the Steelers like. Muse is an athlete plain and simple. Can be moved around the defense from SS to ILB and even to OLB situationally.
198: Dalton Keene TE VaTech: Keene is the ultimate Swiss Army Knife piece for this offense and could become a fan favorite in time. Very good in-line, in pass pro, as a FB, and is a capable receiver as a TE.
232: Sewo Olonilua RB TCU: A short yardage/Goal line specialist. Behind FB blocking of Watt and/or Keene, Olonilua is the perfect compliment for a real power running game in short yardage situations. Spare Conner some hard reps.

I'm not against having 3 Clemson Tigers.
    1. Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia 2. Zach Frazier, C, West Virginia 3. Roman Wilson, WR, Michigan 3. Renardo Green, CB, FSU 4. Mo Kamara, OLB, Colorado State 6. Logan Lee, DT, Iowa 6.Khristian Boyd, NT, Northern Iowa

This morning, I’ve been reading through dozens of mock drafts by Steelers bloggers, and two names are pretty common:

    -John Simpson
    -Tanner Muse

You appear to have followed suit.

I think the dinner with the Clemson proday will still carry some additional weight. If trying to plan this Steelers draft I wouldn't stray too far from their past formula and tendencies. So I just went with meetings I know about. Also my strategy would go like this:
49: Offensive weapon that brings a 'splash' quality. Could be TE, RB, or WR. I will be shocked if it is a QB. Disappointed if it is any position other than WR by this measurement.
102: 49 was an offensive weapon, now get a defensive weapon. DL, LB, or DB. Just needs to have the possibility of seeing the field this season.
124: Now I start to look at players that may not see action this season but have huge upside and fill a perceived need, as in depth.
135: With no 5th round pick this is where I look to take the player the Steelers seem to have shown the most interest in publicly, if not already taken.
198: BPA at any position of need. Needs to bring ST capability.
232: Throw a dart at positions not addressed yet and take the BPA still on the board from that position group.

There are a lot of moves and trades predicted in the first 2 rounds so I really have no logical guess for this draft other than just how I see it in my own head. I think Pittman may be the better overall WR for the Steelers in the long run, but Higgins provides that immediate excitement that anytime he gets the ball he could score. Simpson and Muse just make sense for the Steelers to me. I don't think Taylor will exit round 2 undrafted let alone be there at 102 but he is that tweener Edge player that tends to fall down boards so I took a chance. I might change the names of picks around dozens of times but this basic strategy is what I'm sticking with.

That is great. Really. I can appreciate a well-thought-out methodology.

    49. Claypool - offensive splash player.
    102. Highsmith - defensive weapon with a chance to see the field.
    124. McFarland - depth player with upside.
    135. Dotson - not a player exactly but the position we were all talking about and expecting.
    198. Brooks - needed safety depth and immediate ST help.
    232. Davis - was this the best DL left on the board? time will tell.

Not a Clemson player in the group. But pretty close methodology.
