This fits with the overwhelming tradition of the military (active or retired) that you do not publicly criticize the POTUS on the record.

Over the past few weeks, a reporter or two got people to confirm and corroborate an existing story. Some of which appear to have been willing to violate the traditional gag order. That allowed it to be published.

The comments totally fit with Trump's core philosophies. Everything is transactional for him. What is the reward/compensation for service in the WWI Marines? To someone like Trump there is no tangible result to balance the scales against the horrific conditions and startlingly high mortality rates for WWI. In Trump's world, anyone who accepts such a one sided deal is a "loser" or made a "dumb deal". It is a perspective that is in every single one of his writings and public comments on a variety of subjects since long before he became a political figure.

And he has every right to hold that opinion and approach things from the viewpoint of "what's in it for this side versus that side". But when you create a public persona that is heavily centered on no one else can keep the nation safe and support the military -- the philosophy becomes problematic.
