Who is our #1 WR going into the 2020 season?

To say Ju-Ju had a sophomore jinx is a bit of an understatement. He shrunk at key moments and could not beat double coverage the way a true #1 receiver should. Maybe injuries were partly to blame, but he needs to snap out of it.

Johnson showed promise as a rookie, but he fumbled five times. At times year he was our #1 receiver in 2019. He's very quick and runs nice routes with RAC ability.

Washington remains an enigma. Great in some games, non-existent in others. But he can be great.

I remained intrigued by Cain, who has size, speed, and drew plenty of flags. This type of player should work well with Ben.

While the QB play certainly diminished the receivers last season, you figure this won't be a problem with a healthy Ben. And Ben better come back healthy or this team is finished winning for a while.

An appropriate question is do we have a no. 1 WR right now?

this is where I stand ...

    I think we have a couple 2's and a couple 3's ......

that said I could easily be wrong as it is so difficult to evaluate with the play calling and horrid QB play

    With a #1 QB, Juju is a #1 WR.

I think that is to be determined still ...

I mean what do we have to base it on other than 2018 statistics and in 2018 he had the best WR in the world pulling the double down away from him 80% of the time ...

I think until he proves he can be the 1 without Mr Big Chest pulling that coverage he is a glorified 2 as he has not shown that he can beat the double and still be productive ... that said much of that could have to do with my earlier post on this topic ( shit play calling and even worse QB play ) then toss in injury plagued season as a kicker

I think the answer may be DJ. I fully expect him to hit a wall at some point, but if he continues his progression next season, we could have a 1 and a 1A situation at WR. Certainly with Ben throwing the ball around we'll see better results.

Re: Who is our #1 WR going into the 2020 season?

JuJu... with a healthy* Ben, without AB... his lines are as follows:

    7-75-TD

    9-143-TD
    5-37-TD
    6-114-0

    For those four games:
    27-369-3 TDs

    Extrapolated over a season:
    108-1476-12 TDs

    SUMMATION:
With a good QB, JuJu can indeed be a #1. That said, JuJu is best going across the middle. I’d play DJ and Washington outside with JuJu in the slot.

Neither Duck not Rudolph threw across the middle (look at their target charts; it’s asinine) which, IMO, hurt JuJu’s stats. He was open... a lot (but, ignored).

I dont think they will have one. I think they’ll have JuJu (2), Johnson (2) and Washington (3). I think Cain (4)will bring some long ball talent and Holton will be starting in the Heyward-Bey spot.

You have posted those numbers numerous times, but the people that just want to think that JuJu can't do it won't be discouraged from their doubt.

He has already produced bigtime numbers when AB wasn't in the lineup, yet people will not accept that.

If Ben comes back healthy and his arm is intact and functioning properly, the offense is in position to be lightyears above what we say this season.

I think Washington has proven that he is a guy that can make contested catches and has clearly turned a corner when it comes to route running, reading defenses, conditioning, and what it takes to be a professional.

Johnson is going to be a star. He has the occasional drop, but even that seemed to go away as the season went on. He is a very good returner, he is a great route runner, and you can just see the talent oozing out of him and what he is capable of on the field.

JuJu should be healthy, and he will once again be a stud. I say that JuJu is a #1 WR, and will show it when competent QB play returns and he is right physically.

I love the future of this current WR group. I think they have a chance to be special with a very good quarterback throwing them the ball. I even like what I have seen from Cain coming off the bench. This group is so young that you knew there would be some issues, but I think Washington and Johnson made huge strides this year and appear to be ready to do real damage. Even if you don't believe JuJu is a #1, if you have three legitimate #2 WRs, there are always going to be receivers in single coverage. They can't double everybody. I believe they now have the horses to punish secondaries again if they have a QB to read defenses and get them the ball.

DJs ability to be a legit X and Washingtons total transformation into a well rounded Z is going to allow Juju to get more opportunities to line up as the Y or slot guy again.

The WRs early in the season went just as I thought. Everyone tried to take away JUJU. By the time defenses realized they had to worry about DJ and Washington, Juju was hurt and the QB play was horrible.

He will be better in 2020.

I still want them to add another size speed guy to the group.

I honestly think the WR will be awesome next year:
    Ju-ju and Diontee
    Washington and Caine
good group and with a healthy Ben or a developed Rudolph (or a pick-up) we should see some serious yards from these guys!

JuJu will bounce back having a QB that won't be scared to throw it in the middle of the field. JuJu has a rough a 2019, besides Ben going down, I think the passing of Coach Drake really affected him and that is not counting the injuries he dealt with. Had a lingering foot injury early then he got KO'd in the Cleveland game which gave him a concussion and also injured up his knee. He'll bounce back.

Diontae Johnson though....this man is going to be a good one. His route running, elite quickness and YAC abilty will have Ben throwing to him a lot.

In draft day, Louis Riddick loved the DJ pick. Riddick also called Devin Bush the “best” player in the entire draft.

    SUMMATION:
Riddick is nothing but an Internet homer.

Johnson if we can show him how to hold on to the fucking ball. That dude is going to set the record for fumbles as-is, but he could be a legit playmaker.

Juju is not it. He can do a hell of a lot of damage playing second fiddle, as long as someone else is occupying most of the opponent's attention, similar to a guy whose name I can't remember, something like Jud Dufree.

Both should be better with a competent QB throwing to them.

The football's like a one-man cold to Clifford Franklin. Clifford Franklin's the only man catchin' it, Clifford Franklin's the only man comin' down wid it.

Re: Who is our #1 WR going into the 2020 season?

I think Teegre has some valid points. To expand a bit, Ju-Ju also had a healthy James Conner and Vance McDonald when he put up those numbers. What happened when those to players were out, and AB was gone? He received attention and could not get open as often. He's not 6'4" tall, nor is he blazing fast. Johnson can get open and did when Ju-Ju was out. Washington can make the big play. Ju-ju lost his mojo. He didn't have many big plays and was un-clutch with his hands.

While I do think he can rebound with a healthy Ben, he's not quite a top Ten Wide Receiver like some thought he was. He has much to prove next year, and he needs to rebound big time if he wants to get paid like a top Wide Receiver in free agency.

At this point, I still do not want to see the Steelers spending their 2nd or projected 3rd round comp pick on a Wide Reciever. We might not have that star #1 WR, but we do have very good #2 who gets open runs crisp routes and can RAC, a #3 who can hit the big play, and a #4 ( Cain ) that offers a deep threat and draws flags. This is under the assumption that Ju-Ju can rebound some with Ben and be the #1.

It will be such a difference next season when there is an actual QB playing the position. Who is the #1WR? All of them have a chance to step up to that.

With a legit NFL QB our receivers will be Juju, Johnson and Washington. We'll be okay. Juju played hurt all season with a division 2 QB starting half the games.
