RIP
He was the HC of the Bengals when they weren’t the Bungles. Actually had respect.
RIP Sam.
He was a little wacky at times, but it was great to see a coach stand at a podium that wouldn't just spout "coach speak". I always appreciated that aspect of him as a man.
He was innovative on the football field, and a very good coach that elevated a bad franchise to a high-quality level for some time. He made the game more fun to watch.
In the cold, robotic world of football, the NFL needs more people like Sam in it now, more than ever.
May he RIP.
He was 2 minutes from a Super Bowl championship until Montana/Rice/Taylor took it away.
That "Cleveland" speech to the fans made me laugh so much back then.
Wyche was the only good coach the Bengals had in my lifetime.
As a coach, he was tricky. Probably the first guy to really use the no huddle, and would snap the ball while the other team was caught making substations often with more than 11 men on the field, which essentially changed the game.
As a man, he hated Jerry Glanville, and once called an onside kick when the Bengals were up something like 40-0 in an effort to run up the score. He didn't want women in the locker room where grown men shower either and was hit with a record fine for saying that.
I didn't realize he was that old. Seemed like a cool dude, RIP.
