Next NFL Money Grab - 17 Game Regular Season

Since this is from Jason La Canfora it may be no more than his typical rumor mongering based upon one anonymous source that turns out to be bullshit (the Eagles were going to trade for LeVeon Bell during the 2018 season, Danny Snyder is going to make a major push to hire Tomlin).

But it has all the hallmarks of a typical owners grift to throw some scraps to the players in return for a money grab

How 17-game season would work in proposed CBA with vote expected after the 2019 season

Momentum is growing within ownership, as well as some corridors of the NFLPA, for a new collective bargaining agreement including a 17-game season, with the league preparing to formally present its proposal to players after the regular season....

This process has moved quietly at a swift and amicable pace since early 2019, as reported first by CBS Sports back at the February combine, with a goal of getting a new deal done before the start of the 2021 season. Sources said all of that remains on course, with the NFL showing a willingness to bend significantly on issues like the marijuana policy and commissioner's powers over off-field investigations....

The additional game for each club would be played out-of-market....and would include two byes for each team.

The additional international games would also allow the NFL to create a new broadcast package that would be aimed toward streaming/digital without disrupting or taking away from the current packages of Monday night, Thursday night and the AFC/NFC package. Many owners believe the additional package could bring in $1 billion or more per season....

Furthermore, the league proposal would support an additional wild-card playoff game in each conference, but not an additional round or weekend, which also could be spun off as an additional broadcast package.

    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/h...e-2019-season/

So the regular season is extended from 17 to 19 weeks with further dilution of available games during many weeks and if you want to watch the neutral site games you pay for a streaming package.

Meanwhile the players get to smoke pot and have Roger less involved in discipline for off the field activities while there is no apparent move to reduce the length of rookie contracts before a player can hit free agency or to change the franchise tag provisions.

The greed that would motivate this possibility makes it credible it will happen.

I would really hate to see the players get bogged down by more games over seas

NFL: We are going to shorten overtime by 5 minutes and institute ridiculous rules on tackling to increase player safety

Also NFL: Let's add another game to the NFL season.

Make up your mind. No wonder ratings are declining

They're not actually planning on a 17-game season. It is merely a line of bullshit that they are floating out there ahead of CBA negotiations so that they can give themselves a free bargaining chip.

Owners: "We want a 17-game season."

NFLPA: "This is an outrage! Omg player safety! How DARE you! We won't stand for it!"

Owners: (trying to keep from laughing) "Very well, we can see this issue is very important to you, so against our better judgment, we'll back off our plans for a longer season ... THIS time."

NFLPA: "Damn straight! See, we sure showed THEM we're playing hardball."

Owners: "We've given you a key concession on one of your most important issues. Now it's only fair to give us a concession on one of ours, like guaranteed contracts."

See how that works? Just manufactured leverage. The only reason they keep bringing it up, oh I don't know ... a year or two ahead of labor negotiations, then forget about it until it's time again.

I actually heard the total opposite of what LaCanfora has written. Some broadcast on NFL network said there would still be only one bye week and the extra home game wouldn’t be international at all. They would just alternate between the AFC and NFC in regards to who gets the extra home game.

I guess there’s probably a lot of different proposals on the table. Of course it’s all got to be approved by the NFLPA.

Re: Next NFL Money Grab - 17 Game Regular Season

This from the NFL ministry of propaganda in an article in The Athletic (paywalled) on going to a 17 game regular season

The NFL in its push for a 17th regular-season game has preliminarily concluded there would be no meaningful impact on player injuries, and possibly even a decrease because of a tandem reduction in preseason games.

“What I will say is that the engineers, our statisticians, the health and safety committee have looked at an extension of one game and other scenarios, and the changes in health and safety are minimal,” said Dr. John York, the San Francisco 49ers owner and chairman of the NFL owners health and safety advisory committee. “In fact, in some cases, it’s a minimal decrease. Others it’s a minimal increase.”

As far as media reports from La Canfora and others on a 17 game schedule being in the next CBA

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that talks are advanced between the NFLPA and NFL for a new CBA that includes the extra regular-season game....

Eric Weddle, the LA Rams safety, referring to the Washington Post report, tweeted Friday, “If we agree to 17 game schedule it would be a travesty. Not sure why it’s even on the table. Ugh.”

To which 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman, who is a player representative, replied, “It’s really not. These are tactics from the league using their media connections to push a false story. We aren’t even close to a deal. They are literally pushing out their ‘proposal’ as something we agree with which is ridiculous. Don’t worry brother.”

If they increase the number of games, then they need to increase the salary cap and the 53 man roster to something bigger. Players already have a hard enough time going through a 16 game season without missing time due to injury

Also increases the chance that a player gets a severe head or neck injury...but that doesn’t fall under player safety...I don’t think.

Player safety is subordinate to grabbing for $$ every time - what will bring in more $$$ is how the NFL resolves any question

NFL was fortunate nobody was injured playing on that cow pasture in Mexico City last night but a potential franchise expansion fee for a Mexico City team was in play so no way the NFL cancelled again

A year after Chiefs-Rams on Monday Night Football was canceled because of poor field conditions, the turf at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City was deemed safe by the league despite looking anything but during the game.

Owners should change the grounding penalty and WR needing only 1 foot in bounds to increase offensive output.

Automatic first down and free 5 yards for intentional grounding, because the QB was just promoting safety for the game by throwing it away and not taking a sack! They should be rewarded for that
