    Diontae Johnson Injury

Has anyone seen an update? Any word on a fine for the late hit?

    In concussion protocol.

I thought fines come out next week after the Monday night game is finished.

I assume that is how it will work - they had to get the suspensions out ASAP to respond to the horrible PR mess (never a good sign when something is on the Drudge Report) while presumably will get fines related to Helmetgate and the garden variety blows to the head last night early next week.

That hit was ugly, never seen someone's ears bleed from getting hit. I don't know if he'll be back vs the Bengals. Well it's a long week, but I still don't expect it.

    Re: Diontae Johnson Injury

This is the exact kind of head injury that starts a players short and brutal medical based slide out of the league. Hopefully, DJ recovers and does not become a guy that suffers from a pattern of concussions. But the NFL is desperately trying to legislate this EXACT type of hit out of the game.

Like I said in another thread, Randall and the NFL are lucky that something even more troubling took place in this game. Hit was dirty and uncalled for. Randall should be suspended and fined. But he won’t because the NFL actually doesnt give a shit. They just don’t want bad press.

On the NFL Radio channel on Sirius XM this morning a Green Bay Packers fan called in and discussed Damarious Randall's time with the Packers and said that he was a dirty player for them, and that was a big reason why the Packers did not want him around any longer. I don't know if that is true or not, but he was a first round pick for the Packers and he was gone after year 3.

    Would make sense

There is a good article in The Athletic (paywalled - I got a good discount on the subscription and find it to be an excellent site with all the writers who fled/were laid off from SI, ESPN, and newspapers across the country).

Michael Lombardi, who Haslam fired as GM in is first year after buying the Browns, wrote today:

Thursday night’s horrible display is a reflection of the Browns’ culture. And it starts at the top.

Character has not been something General Manager John Dorsey values when building a team. He is a modern-day Al Davis, the former owner of the Raiders and a man I worked with side-by-side for 10 years. Davis, like Dorsey, only valued talent — he felt it was the coach’s job to get the players to play their best. If players fell asleep in meetings or showed up late, Davis was not concerned, he would instead get angry at the coach. And the poor coach could not discipline the poor behavior because Davis would overrule any decision. Dorsey is the same way; he does not care about the “off the field” character; he only sees talent. The other stuff isn’t important.

The Browns have no mental toughness as a team, in part because Kitchens cannot coach the team tough. Dorsey controls the roster

    https://theathletic.com/1381809/2019...ts-at-the-top/

Dorsey of course signed Kareem Hunt after the Chiefs released Hunt when he was caught on video abusing a young woman.

    Re: Diontae Johnson Injury

I always find it ironic how, after a Steelers player gets injured from a hit like that, one that was completely legal just a few years ago, no one ever complains about the "pussification" of the league. Why is that?

I'm not trying to troll here and I apologize if it comes off that way, but it really gets my goat when I read that crap. Had today's players been playing within the rules of football in the 1980s, you would see deaths on the field. Why, because, players today are legitimately stronger and faster. There's no way around the technological jump in everything from pads and helmets that make players "safer" also making them better weapons to training, fitness, and so on.

Let's break this down a bit. A DB running 4.56 seconds in the 40 and weighing 200 pounds, "can produce up to 1600 pounds of tackling force,"* Such conclusions produce something called a G-load. When you slap someone on the back, you're producing a G-Load of about 4. (four Gs). Hopping off a step is a G-Load of 8. Concussions usually result from G-loads beginning around 100. Today's NFL impacts are hitting 150 Gs.* While distribution of that through the body helps, when it's a helmet to helmet hit, most of that goes directly to the head.

So, please, can we stop with the whining about the pussification of the NFL?

(Now, if you want to talk about the pussification of the NFL QB, there's a bit more to that. It's gotten a bit ridiculous).

Bullshit. I think we all know the difference between taking a guy out with a direct crown to ear hole hit and the pussification of the NFL. A hit like that hasn't been legal since the Steelers won thier last SB. Pussification is all related to the simple unavoidable barely making contact with a helmet that is a clear over reaction to media.

Exactly. Leading with the helmet was already a 15-yard penalty, either for unnecessary roughness or "spearing." The difference is that they used to only call it for cheap shots, not for accidentally bonking heads. Now it is basically just personal foul penalties thrown in at random, based on blind luck of who happened to be running or turning in what direction in a particular instant.

You guys (you know who you are) can spare me the bullshit about form tackles, and rugby, and old leather helmets. Rugby is a different sport for a reason, old football was basically rugby, and you are not going to form-tackle a guy who's diving to catch a pass while you are also diving to knock the ball away. Hey, I know, why don't swimmers throw fastballs instead of doing butterfly? Because it's a different fucking sport, that's why.

Players also do not die from concussions from helmet-to-helmet hits. That almost always is because of neck injuries. THERE is a case where avoiding head-down tackles makes the game safer, but most players are well aware of it for their own safety, and that generally is not what is going on on these helmet-to-helmet hits.
    See you Space Cowboy ...

Can Rudolph rebound from his dreadful performance and actually get the ball to him, that's the tricky part.

    This is good news.

Deductive reasoning tells me that the blood running down the side of his head was not due to some head trauma (but, more likely from a laceration to his ear).

Then again, maybe the blood was indeed stemming from his brain, and the pressure was “relieved” and his woes were “cured”... like the doctoring of the days of yore.

So you’re saying his humors are in balance and he no longer has an excess of bile?

Good to hear. Steelers must have fabulous leeches.

Not to mention that Snell is a better pass protector by FAR than either of the other two.

I’d be more excited about Samuels if
You held a gun to my head. Snell has just played so slow...

Nothing back there (including Conner) at this point is really anything to be excited over...lol

I'm just happy to get another body back. The more healthy players, the better. More depth, more options, more situational options such as short yardage specialist...third down specialist, etc...
