The Steelers' decision is looking even better in wake of AB's new helmet saga and offseason in Oakland

The Steelers' decision is looking even better in wake of Antonio Brown's new helmet saga and his offseason in Oakland

Pittsburgh's ability to locate wide receiver talent in all rounds of the NFL draft will ease the loss of Brown right away

    by Bryan DeArdo

Antonio Brown was traded for third and fifth-round draft picks back in March. At that time, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team that traded Brown to the Oakland Raiders, took considerable heat for trading Brown to Oakland without getting a first or second-round pick in return.

Less than a half a year later, you wonder what the Steelers would get if the trade to trade Brown now, in wake of Brown's recent saga that has seen him threaten to retire over whether or not he will be allowed to wear his old helmet in 2019. It's safe to say that they wouldn't get close to what the Raiders gave them in March for the rights to Brown, who continues to be at the center of drama and controversy despite getting a fresh start in Oakland and again becoming the NFL's highest-paid receiver.

AB is crazy but he’s not THAT crazy.

He’s now saying he’ll play this season despite losing the helmet decision in arbitration.

I was not upset when the steelers traded Brown in March, since the steelers had way too much drama with Brown since last year and the steelers had enough ... It was time to end the circus

I was way more upset by the time the steelers traded Santonio Holmes in 2010 for a 5th round pick.

Brown is of course in another level, but for Bell, far too much controversy with him in the last years too, not just because of his contract situation, but his suspensions, his tweets that are sometimes controversy, talk about his contract situation before a playoffs game (I know it was a journalist who had asked this question, but Bell should have said like all players in this situation that I am focused only on our playoff game right now) and several other things.

Maybe it was not all in the locker room but it was a still headache for the team.

But yes Brown is in another level.

This past weekend, Benjamin Allbright was tweeting about that. His sources inside of the Raiders organization said that they’d never make another deal with Kevin Colbert.

    Really. No joke.

I’m not convinced that he was a locker room distraction though. No one calls Jalen Ramsey a locker room distraction and he’s just as bad with his mouth on Twitter. Bell turned out to be an idiot...from beginning to end. But he was a good teammate from what some of the insiders say...he just, clearly, wasnt smart...caught with weed (at the time everyone blamed that on Blount - now that agenda has changed), he missed his drug test, contract holdouts...that’s all just “stupid” shit.

For the situation with Blount in 2014, both deserve the blame for that.

Nah that hasn't changed, I still think Blount was a huge influence on Bell early on and most likely still is. Blount was by far and away the worst off season pick up we have ever had.

The DECISION to get rid of him may have been a good one.

    The DEAL was not.

"Hey, I see you have THREE first-round picks this year? Can we have a second-rounder?"

The deal was not too good, but at the same time Colbert had very little power in this situation, since not many team was interested in Brown because of the circus he brings to a team right now

It was the time to move on for the steelers and yes I was disappointed with the return the steelers had for Brown, but I was not upset because of the situation ... I was way more upset when the Steelers had traded Santonio Holmes for a 5th round pick to a contender at this time.

Yeah maybe the deal was not great for the Steelers but, it was time to move Brown. Plus for a long time the Steelers hid the Brown issues.

I think with hindsight, the steelers would have traded Brown after the 2016 season, but of course it's very easy to say that now but I know that Joe Greene would have done that!

Bill Cowher On Antonio Brown: ‘He Does Sometimes Create Headlines That Can Be Disruptive To A Football Team’

“I think the biggest thing is to get himself ready to play the game,” said The NFL Today analyst Bill Cowher in an interview with CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith at NFL on CBS Media Day. “He is a very talented receiver, but he does sometimes create headlines that can be disruptive to a football team. For him, as he gets through this, find a helmet that is going to fit. Find a helmet that is going to pass all of the regulatory elements that need to be there. Make sure your feet are okay and get ready to play. “But, I think when it’s all said and done and Week 1 gets here, he’ll be lined up ready to go in his Raider uniform.”

Tomlin foretold all of this in a press conference shortly after the Facebook Live shenanigans. He basically said that any team would put up with crap up to a point. Then they wouldn't. Weird. That is exactly what happened.

I don't think that Colbert and the Steelers engaged in any 5 dimensional chess here. They just had a line. AB crossed it. He got sent packing.

The fact that he is now apparently well off the rails, well that is just kinda gravy.

As I said at the time of the trade and in the hundreds (literally) of AB threads since then:

There were/are legitimate reasons why only the Raiders (and “reportedly” the Bills) were the only (two) team(s) who had ANY interest in AB.

The writing was on the wall wall that AB was headed for a monumental collapse. His “furniture throwing” case was still in limbo, and if that had gone south, AB assuredly would have been suspended. Regardless of that one legal case, there was a plethora of other indicators that AB was going to implode.

The Steelers got lucky to get a R3 and a R5 for him.
