Harbaugh on Lamar rushing 139 times: 'Take the over'

The Baltimore Ravens won't shy away from riding Lamar Jackson's legs.

Joining NFL Network's Inside Training Camp Live Sunday, coach John Harbaugh was asked by ex-Ravens coach Brian Billick what the pitch count on Jackson running this season might be, noting Cam Newton's career-high is 139 rushing attempts.

"I'd bet the over on that one. I'd bet the over for sure," Harbaugh said without hesitation. "It's going to be interesting. I don't think we know the exact numbers or the math."

The more interesting part of Harbaugh's plans for Jackson is that the Ravens aren't just looking to run the QB more than any in history, the picture is bigger. Much bigger.

Harbaugh and his staff are seeking an evolutionary effect on football.

"If you look back and think of the history a little bit, the game was probably revolutionized with Bill Walsh and Joe Montana," Harbaugh said. "And that's been the model for the last 25, 30 years, and we've all been chasing that model, pretty much, trying to find that quarterback, find that rhythm, and all the things that go with that offense, and it really hasn't changed too much.

"None of us can envision what's to come in the future. I don't know how many of the quarterbacks from the 60s or 70s would have been able to succeed. Not too many, probably. (Dan) Marino, I'm sure, could have played in any era, but a lot of those other guys would not have been great in the west-coast-offense-era. What's the next era going to be? Well, we're about to find out. We're about to find out what the limits are on that. I think it's going to open up opportunities for quarterbacks all across, and in our league, and it's going to make it tough on defenses. So, that's the idea."

It's a big idea. No transformative plan started with a small idea.

Whether Harbaugh's Ravens become an evolutionary force or the latest big idea to fall into the sideline ditch depends greatly on whether Jackson stays healthy and develops into a dangerous passer. If he does, and Baltimore blasts through defenses consistently, teams will be in search of the next Lamar Jackson.

It sounds like he's envisioning something that Knute Rockne would've approved of.

So the Ravens will surprise a bunch of teams and then the Evil Hoodie will realize he just needs to play the same obscure defense that some small school from the 1920s played and it'll be over.

I do not think Harbaugh and his OC (Greg Roman) are dumb enough to have an offense that only worked in the 1950s or before.

With a QB like Lamarr Jackson, you have no choice but to play to his strengths so the ravens know that ...... Roman has already had success with QB of the style of Jackson too .... Like Colin Kaepernick with the 49ers or in his season with Tyrod Taylor and the Bills in 2015.

Greg Roman is the OC Ravens, the same OC who was the OC of the 49ers in the Jim Harbaugh era and Colin Kapernick had his best moments under them.Roman was also the OC of the Buffalo Bills in 2015 when Tyrod Taylor had a very good season ... Roman was fired after only 2 games in 2016, which was a panic move by Rex Ryan.

So it's not new for him to have a QB of the style of Lamar Jackson.

Last season he was in the neighborhood of 22-23 pass attempts. If that’s increasing, as Jackson has said, the rushing attempts are going to have to drop unless the Ravens somehow add 8 plays a game on offense.

With Lamar Jackson as QB, the Ravens had over 40 rushing attempts almost every game and their time of possession in offense was like 37 minutes per game or something crazy like that ... They also had 230 rushing yards per game with that!

I do not know how the Ravens offense is going to look, but if Jackson stays healthy I would be very surprised if the Ravens don't finish first in rushing yards this year! .... Oh yeah we saw this in the NFL before. Kordell Stewart, Tim Tebow..

That formula equals early playoff exits and 0 superbowls.

Only successful 'running qb' I've seen in the NFL was Cam Newton, who also = 0 superbowl wins. And you do have to say that Cam is a much better passer than Jackson is.

Right. But if he’s increasing his pass attempts by 8 per game, there’s going to have to be less rushing attempts which is what Jackson has eluded to recently.

My take: You've got one guy who can throw the ball and a buncha guys who can run. If you keep making the throwing guy run, he's gonna eventually get injured. Then you'll be left with zero guys who can throw.

The Steelers know how to defeat this sort of attack. It's how we piss-pounded the Panthers last year. You just go after the QB every time. You'll get burned a couple times, but eventually the opposing OC will face the dilemma of either forcing his QB to throw behind protection or risk carting him off the field with a season ending injury.

Why not run him as long as he's on his rookie contract? If/when he's making $100M guaranteed, that's a different story.
