JuJu Smith-Schuster Cited As One Of PFF’s Biggest Draft Misevaluations

Draft evaluation is an imperfect science. Actually, scratch that. It’s not even a science. A lot of it involves making hypotheses based on available data—projecting a college player’s potential for a successful NFL career based on his film and his measurements—but there’s a reason it’s often described as a crapshoot.

Because we’re dealing with human beings here, human beings who know that they have the autonomy to flip their own script, either positively or negatively. Players have the ability to transform their bodies, for example, to become something else that was not projected or accounted for. They may discover a new dedication that helps take their game to a next level that was not predicted. And sometimes people just get things wrong.

It’s good when we acknowledge that in this process, and Pro Football Focus recently took a stab at doing that, putting together an article in which they take a look at some of their biggest misevaluations of players through the draft process in recent years, focusing on the players they were too low on.

You’ll surely recognize at least one name on the list, as it includes the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 62nd-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, second-round wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, a 20-year-old true junior out of USC.

“After a breakout sophomore campaign in 2015, Smith-Schuster took a massive step back in 2016, racking up only 914 yards through the air”, Michael Renner wrote of the 2018 Pro Bowler’s college campaign. “What we didn’t account for was a wholly uncreative route tree forced upon Smith-Schuster that wasn’t conducive to separation whatsoever. The 113th-ranked player on our 2017 board, Smith-Schuster has been easily the top wideout from that class”.

FIRE GOODELL.. Yes, still, fire him.

And about the article, there's tons of draft misevaluations every year. Basically any superstar that was drafted after round 1 would be considered a miss. If we had a time machine and could see how good players would be in the future, the draft would look entirely different. AB and Bell would have been top 5 picks, emmanuel sanders would have also went in the first round. Artie Burns would be undrafted, Big Ben would have been the #1 pick over Eli and Rivers. Teams would have traded their #1 draft picks for the next 4 years to draft Mahomes at #1. And he definitely wouldn't have sat on the bench in his first year lol.

No, but he still was good enough to be elected into the Hall of Fame, so he didn't suck that's for sure.

Having both Chris Carter AND Jake Reed basically made it impossible to double-cover any of their receivers.

    Still in a great company!

I have no doubt that JuJu will have a great career if he stays healthy and he remains humble!

In his first 2 seasons, JuJu has responded very well to all the challenges he has had and I am confident that he is ready for his next challenge!

Projecting the top 10 slot receivers for the 2019 NFL season

    2.JuJu Smith-Schuster

Well, I think this pretty much gives away which side of the debate my model comes down on regarding Smith-Schuster's impact without Antonio Brown on the field. Last season, Smith-Schuster was one of only six total receivers to see over 400 snaps aligned in the slot. (Pro Football Focus counts 421 total snaps out of the slot, tied for fourth most in the NFL, which was good for 61.5 percent of his snaps.) My model projects him to be used on the outside more, but I still project between 56 percent and 60 percent of his snaps will come from the slot, based on his success in 2018. Smith-Schuster undoubtedly benefited from playing with Brown last season, but the seven-time Pro Bowler (who was traded to Oakland this offseason) also benefited from playing with Smith-Schuster, who earned 660 yards after the catch in 2018, most among receivers. Here's some more context: Using computer vision, I tracked how often opposing defenders entered a "halo" 6-feet in diameter around each receiver last season, and Smith-Schuster faced pressure (defenders in his halo) at the seventh-highest rate. In other words, while Smith-Schuster will undoubtedly face an adjustment this season, there are some key indicators that he will continue to have a top-level impact, like his ability to earn tough yards after the catch and withstand an already significant amount of defensive attention, even when Brown was still on his team. Fantasy-wise, Smith-Schuster is my No. 7 projected wideout (in PPR formats).

I like how Juju snuck into the building without anyone noticing him. Dude's a ninja! Seriously though, I like how he's coming with a workman-like attitude and not buying into his own hype.

I feel in my heart of hearts that he will. Just watching him on draft day with his family around him and him jumping into the ocean and having a good time. As Pczach said he just gets it, he has fun with it, and is still a kid at heart. I don't see that changing it's who he is.
