Every move will be magnified & they must tighten things up

Seeing this training camp entrance from Jaguars star cornerback Jalen Ramsey yesterday gave me chills.

And not in a good way.

Ramsey, in the middle of contentious contract negotiations with Jacksonville, hopped out of a Brinks truck while a hype man with a megaphone yelled out things like, “This man’s coverage is so good, he better have his own cell phone service.” Pretty clever I must admit.

Also things like, “The man’s so good they better give him his own jail…because these receivers are on 24-hour lockdown.” Eh, that one missed the mark.

Then the real kicker at the end, “It’s time to get this money!”

As I watched, sure I was entertained. But my next thought was that this is EXACTLY the kind of thing the Steelers must avoid today when they report to training camp.

We all remember the helicopter ride Antonio Brown enjoyed while flying into camp last year. You might also remember the fire truck that James Harrison rolled into Latrobe with a couple years ago.

I thought the helicopter was over the top, but I loved the fire truck, and even more so, the front end loader that Keisel drove into camp and dumped his suitcase out, saying it was time to get to work.

It was fine for the steelers today ... except for Eli Rogers

Hey, Eli: This semi-truck entrance ain’t it, chief

Eli Rogers rolled into Saint Vincent College Thursday hanging from the side of a semi-truck. He was decked out for work, wearing a hardhat, gloves and a fluorescent green long-sleeve jumpsuit covered by black overalls.

It looked a little something like this from my vantage point:

But Rogers doesn't work construction. He doesn't work for a trucking company, either. He doesn't fight fires. He plays football. And he might not do so in Pittsburgh in 2019 if he doesn't take his situation seriously.

For a team that missed the playoffs and was widely described as a "circus" in 2018, the Steelers were all business through offseason activities. First came rookie minicamp, then OTAs, then minicamp and not a peep of drama could be found. It couldn't even be manufactured, which is saying something in today's digital world. With Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell officially gone, it appeared the team was solely focused on one thing: Football. And more specifically, winning football.

That notion held true Thursday as players reported for camp.

There was Joe Haden in his Rolls-Royce and his authentic Sidney Crosby sweater. There was Bud Dupree on a scooter. Range Rovers, Camaros, Challengers and tricked-out trucks aplenty.

Tomlin pleased with team's readiness for camp

LATROBE, Pa. – For the players about to compete for roster spots and roles within that roster, an NFL training camp has an unmistakable air of “ready or not, here it comes.”

At the end of an afternoon that started with check-ins and weigh-ins and ended with the annual run test, Coach Mike Tomlin said he was pleased with the group’s readiness.

“We’re off to a relatively clean start. I was pleased with the condition of the men when they reported,” said Tomlin. “The weights were impressive, man for man, when you went down the line positionally, and that was reinforced by their performance in the run test. I liked the punctuality of the group, and now we’re off and running with this process of team development.”
