The formula spits out a number that no NFL team will have trouble paying for a functional starting QB. So no matter how young, successful, and business savy a QB is -- the team has all the leverage. Don't want to take the multi-year extension? Fine. Two years of a franchise tag are coming your way. Don't want that? Sit out.
Everyone assumes the next CBA will be primarily about a split between cap dollars and profits to the owners, and it will. But I strongly suspect that the NFLPA is also going to bring an elimination of the franchise tag and gauraunteed contracts to the table.
