It didn’t surprise many when Rams safety Oshiomogho Atogwe became an unrestricted free agent at midnight Tuesday.
NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported that Atogwe officially became a free agent overnight, according to a league source, and the expected move now allows the safety to negotiate with any team. According to La Canfora, the Rams continued to negotiate with Atogwe ahead of the deadline and will try to retain him.
The Rams held exclusive negotiating rights with Atogwe up to the deadline, but they didn’t extend a tender at 110 percent of his 2009 salary — roughly $7 million — that it would have taken to retain his services this season. Atogwe made $6.3 million as the Rams’ franchise player last season.
While the Rams would like to retain Atogwe, other teams that could pursue him include the Dolphins and Cowboys.
