Steelers Colbert, Tomlin At West Virginia Pro Day On Thursday

West Virginia is holding their annual college pro day on Thursday and Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin are both on hand to observe it, according to Andrew Groover of the NFL Network. If they miss out on Bush(I expect they will) I think they'll look at Long in round 2 or their first 3rd round pick.

imo Round 2 is too early for an undersized ILB project with poor tackling technique.

Sounds perfect! Do you think they can trade up to ensure they get him? Fingers crossed!

2019 NFL Draft Player Profiles: West Virginia LB David Long

    https://thumbs.gfycat.com/EveryDappe...ish-mobile.mp4

Another huge concern with Long’s game is his tackling technique which severely lacks at times. Long’s poor tackling technique rears its ugly head too often on his tape as he has a tendency to drop a shoulder or use his body on a moving target instead of just wrapping up the ball carrier. Above, he whiffs completely on his target, opting for the big hit rather than a clean tackle. That will not slide at the next level as Long will need to seriously polish his ability to square up and wrap up ball carriers.

Athletically, there is a lot to like about Long’s transition to the NFL. Fundamentally though, there is a lot to dislike. Long is one of the more polarizing prospects in this year’s linebacker class as there is a significant gap between him and the first tier of linebackers. Should he at least find a way to clean up his tackling technique, he could be a serviceable starter in the NFL but until then he may just be a mid-round project piece.

we may very well draft him, but hopefully not until the 3rd or 4th round.

click on this link to watch an example of his tackling technique on occasion:

Kind of William Jackson on LeVeon Bell type tackle.

Dave Bryan on today's terrible podcast said that Long's section of tape looks better than Bush's.

I know some may not care about his opinion but this guy knows his football. Best work of any Steelers site on the web Imho.

Long seems like the type of guy they would get in round 1

It was a bad play and he needs work in that area but he racked up tackles as WVU

I respect your opinion, you're definitely very knowledgable.

he does need some work, just think the 2nd round round is too early for him. but since you like David Long I'll take another much harder look at him...

Wouldn't say I like him 'yet', I'm intrigued after I read the report of him on Steelers Depot. Wish he was healthy. a 40 time and cone drills would be nice to have( FWIW: NFL . com has him at 4.4 forty but that's the numbers for the other David Long from Michigan).

Round 3 seems ideal. Wouldn't be surprised if they took him in round 2.

I think he's a player that can be had in the 4th or 5th round.

I've seen him make a lot of plays around the line of scrimmage. He appears to struggle in coverage if trying to mirror in the open field.

IMO, he's not a player I would consider taking in the first couple rounds of the draft. I think he has value later in the draft.

Re: Steelers Colbert, Tomlin At West Virginia Pro Day On Thursday

David Long leads with his shoulder... a lot. If you can teach him to “wrap”, he’ll be a steal. Some players develop as they enter the NFL; others do not. If Long is the prior, he’ll flourish (because, he routinely “gets” to the ball carrier); if Long is of the latter ilk, his ceiling would be a good special-teamer (gunner).

Long’s biggest weakness (IMO) is his that he gets juked in coverage. When he’s able to make a bee-line towards the ball carrier, he’s great. When he has to “stick with a receiver”, he falls for cuts. He has make-up speed, so it’s not blatantly obvious in college, but it could be exposed... especially if he’s covering Keenan Allen.

As I’ve said in multiple threads: there are legitimate reasons why he was both Big 12 DPOY and second-team All American.

That said, I see him as a very early Day 3 pick. Teams will go to sleep, awaken to see Long is still available at the start of the day, and clamor (and trade up) to acquire him.
