    James Conner, Dapper Dan Sportsman of the Year, serves as role model for resilience

    Every Friday during football season, the Make-A-Wish foundation brings children dealing with illnesses to Steelers practices. The kids, many of whom are in treatment for diseases, come from all over the country to meet their favorite players. Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown are two of the most popular requests, but they’re starting to get some stiff competition from one of the team’s newer players.


    James Conner might not have the star power of Roethlisberger or Brown — at least not yet — but he’s an inspiration for the children who visit. He gives them hope.


    “A lot of times the children will be in the middle of treatment for cancer or they just finished treatment,” said Leigh Ann Lubarsky, director of program services for the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish foundation. “When they meet James, they’re kind of like kindred spirits. After the visit, I’ll ask them why they wanted to meet James. And they’ll say, ‘Well, he had cancer just like me.’ For a lot of our kids he’s such a great role model..........
