Steelers promote 7-year veteran assistant Shaun Sarrett

A former lineman at Kent State, Sarrett coached at Marshall and then Duke before the Steelers.

Did they even look at other candidates? Wish they would have gone outside for hiring. The whole promoting from within hasn't panned out

There you go, clan mentality. Another Butler move, promise the guy the job without bringing in healthy competition. Good luck!

How much do we trust Tomlin to bring in the right guy externally? That's how we wound up with Bicknell.

This may actually make sense. Other than Pouncey and Decastro, the line is guys that did not flourish until Munch (and Sarrett - who was at least here about the whole time) came in and taught things his way.

I'd bet the guy who teaches things as a pale imitation of Munch has a better shot of continuing that success than the guy who wants to run and entirely new system.

Or it all goes tits up and no one can block anyone. Either way, should be fun to argue about an OL coach for 6 months.

Draft picks over FA and promoting coaches from within... that's the Steeler way. It works unless the draft picks are busts and the coaching tree is bad. I acknowledge they've been above average the past 10 years... a playoff win here and there... <golf clap>

I liked Kugler. Wasn't he an external hire?

I wonder how the guys on the line like Sarrett? Might not be the worst move, but I would have liked to see if guys liked the idea of playing for a 20 year NFL veteran, rather than Munchak's apprentice. Maybe Sarrett was able to snatch the pebble from Munchak's hand?

They could have certainly brought in someone, but if there's an area that needs very little tinkering, it's the OL. Sarrett is the smart move. I remember last year around this time when Munch was being looked at for HC gigs, some were worried we might lose Sarrett as well.

New OL Coach Shaun Sarrett Already Putting His Stamp On The Team

    By Alex Kozora
    Posted on May 15, 2019

No one wanted to see Mike Munchak leave. But if felt inevitable, if not for a head coaching job, going somewhere to be closer to family. Denver turned out to be the perfect landing spot. However, as we’ve written before, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in Shaun Sarrett’s capable hands. It may be his first job carrying the title of OL coach but it’s a role he essentially held in 2013, taking over when the hiring of Jack Bicknell Jr. proved to be a flop.

With the Steelers beginning OTAs and minicamp, we’re getting our first glimpse at how Sarrett will operate. Some of the photos released by players and shot by the team show him incorporating what appear to be new drills for his offensive line.

Here’s one, sent out by R.J. Prince, cut after rookie minicamp, that shows him holding something resembling a steering wheel.

Nobody cares about steering wheels, footballs in pads or gimmicks...just get the job done.
