    Government Shutdown

Not trying to really start a political discussion here, but I figured there was the possibility of it becoming that eventually if enough people get involved lol (Hence why I posted it here). Who here is affected by it? I'm an employee with the Interior so I've been furloughed, sucks that it happened after the holidays, aka the most expensive time of the year lol.

I got enough saved to wait it out for 4 months if need be. Unlikely it goes longer than that before TSA goes on strike or something haha.

Nothing here yet but if the FHA isn't approving loans we're likely to see a slow down in new construction which we will feel. Sorry to hear you're affected FG

Yep, I'm affected (I work for USDA). I also have enough of a rainy day fund to wait it out for 3-4 months. I honestly can't see it going that long, however.

Cause Trump cared about his country so much when he dodged the draft lol. A real patriot like John McCain would have gone to war and back for the country he loved. And actually did.

Both sides are full of shit, I'm just sick of how nobody's willing to call BS on their own party's bullshit. Yall sound like a bunch of Patriots**** fans defending the cheaters, seriously..

Of course also nobody's got the balls to vote for a 3rd party so I guess we all deserve what we get for being so god damn stupid

Sorry for anyone hit by the shutdown, especially now that a pay period has elapsed and paychecks are being missed. I endured my share of those at the Justice Department, including the three week Clinton- Gingrich shutdown, and know what a pain in the ass they are to federal employees and contractors.

Security lines starting to go to hell at the Atlanta airport since for some reason the TSA agents are not thrilled about not getting paid while they are required to report to work and are calling off sick

Trump didn't dodge the draft. That was another liberal lie due to their blind hatred for Trump.

Yes, Trump is no angel, but the hate from the liberal media is ridiculous. Yes, Trump should stay off Twitter or at least tone it down. The back and forth battle between he and the liberal media is unneeded. I don't think that will go away though. The guy could cure cancer and CNN would spin it into something negative.

I'm a conservative, but I am able to admit their faults. Like their actions for healthcare. I certainly don't want single payer or Obamacare, but they should have come up with a better plan then what they did.

As for the shutdown, I hope it ends soon due to the people/families affected by it.

I feel bad for people effected when the democrats were busy partying in Hawaii, and Puerto Rico on Lobbyists dime. Your are right Trump has his deficiencies but the Libs have all voted in favor of wall in last few years, yet now they say is immoral. Total BS. 5 Billion is nothing in context of budget. Besides feeling bad for workers not getting paid I feel really bad for families of victims of crimes committed by the illegals. Anyone saying a wall doesn't help is lying as well. Shit why have walls at Heinz field, we can all just walk in and get free beer and hot dogs.

    Re: Government Shutdown

They refused to fund the wall in the last go 'round well, Trump was going to keep everything shut down and decided that he would sign it but warned that it's the last time he'll sign a budget without funding for the wall. Now they're trying to pin this on him like it's his fault when the dems could get the fed open just as easily but they'd rather a) Point to the big bad wolf leaving families unpaid or b) Say that Trump didn't deliver on his promise of getting a wall done. He has even offered to compromise regarding DACA and citizenship. Dems would rather point the finger and fly off on vacation than get a deal done. Trump was voted in on illegal immigration control and border security. He was voted in to stand up to the left. Did they think that he'd just roll over?

    Re: Government Shutdown

Well the White House just passed a bill yesterday making it law that furloughed feds have to get back paid. At least we know for sure we're getting paid when this is all over. I got 2.5 months left before I need to sell some stocks to pay the bills lol. Would rather not do that, I've been killing it in the market. Portfolio gained almost 20% since October

Working for the government must be amazing.

Better pay, benefits, hours, retirement and job security

and all paid for by the lower class private sector

plus the 20 Trillion we are now in debt (close to $200,000 per taxpayer).

I am not talking AT you FG or anyone who is employed by government in particular.

Just pointing out how nice it is that the government can legislate their own prosperity.

Well, we can stop voting in politicians that don't have the best interest of the middle class in mind, but for that to happen we gotta start voting for another party. R and D have been bought off long ago.

In any case it's not true in my case that government employees are higher paid. I work in the IT field and if I were to work for google or microsoft I'd probably get paid 3x as much. I still may go that route, who knows. I've been studying up on more certifications during this furlough.

I feel you on the 20 trillion in debt, but almost none of that is caused by employees on the government payroll (not counting the politicians who we all know, fall under a different category). But of course that's a whole different discussion about how much money is wasted because of some total dipshits we have 'working' for us in washington.

A third party ain't gonna do squat. Trump is as close as you'll get get to it for now. Even if a third party is elected the R's and D's will still run the roost.

    Great points and agreed.

    Re: Government Shutdown

Folks doing what they can to stay busy while waiting for the shutdown to end

How have furloughed workers been filling their time? In part, by watching porn.
According to data gathered by the analytics team at Pornhub, the internet’s biggest porn site, traffic from DC area domains was up 6.32 percent overall the week of January 7 to 11 as compared to pre-shutdown averages. It seems like users are squeezing in a little extra me time before breakfast, and there was a 12 percent spike after midnight....
Viewership was up nationally as well—perhaps a reflection of the fact that most of the federal workforce is outside the DC region? Overall, US traffic was up almost 6 percent. Pre-shutdown data was gathered from the weeks of December 3-7 and 10-14 so that holiday traffic would not affect the results.

I also work in IT and if I went back to the private sector, I'd immediately make 30-40% more. However, I'm also over 50 now and age discrimination in the private sector is rampant, particularly in IT, so I'd also be walking around with a HUGE bull's-eye on my back. This was also the biggest reason for me going back to work for the federal government about 3 years ago.

Some eye-opening reading: If You’re Over 50, Chances Are the Decision to Leave a Job Won’t be Yours

And if you ever are the victim of age discrimination, best of luck in actually proving it.

Yep. They could literally zero out the non-defense discretionary portion of the federal budget tomorrow and it wouldn't even so much as move the needle.

Not really. First of all, consider how these shutdowns come about: Congress intentionally delays budgetary matters until the last second so they can create a crisis if the President objects to all the pork. They've been playing chicken with shutdowns for decades. Presidents have always buckled under the pressure because they're afraid of the effect on the next midterm, so it kinda surprised everyone when this one stuck to his guns.
Trump has shown himself to be very reasonable on this matter. He has attempted to negotiate and offered concessions. The Dems have flatly rejected all of it and offered nothing themselves.
Trump's motivation is simply doing what he campaigned on; building his wall. The Dems' motivation is 100% political; defy Trump, use the shutdown to score political points, and appease the far left fringe of their own base.

So no... I do not blame both sides equally. The Dems fermented this crisis and are wholly responsible for its continuation. All they have to do to end it is give the man his 5 Billion, but they have no interest in ending it. They want it to carry on as long as possible, since they believe all of the suffering benefits them politically.

FWIW, I think this one is gonna blow up in their faces because the people they are hurting are their own base. It's not like government workers are Republicans...

You mean like the Coast Guard and (not the least bit ironically) the Border Patrol? Not to mention federal prison guards, the Secret Service and the FBI?

There are PLENTY of Republicans working for the federal government. Incidentally, none of the groups I mentioned are receiving a paycheck at the moment either.

And speaking personally, I'm an independent who is beyond tired of BOTH parties' bullshit. And there are a TON of us within the federal ranks as well.

FWIW I agree with you. While illegal immigration is a serious problem and a can that's been kicked down the road too many times, I don't believe that a wall will fix it. Having said that... The real "manufactured crisis" is the shutdown itself. I recommend telling your congress critter what you just told me.
