Yeah let's hire the guy who coordinated the 32nd ranked defense last year all while Forrest Gump stays as DC
Weren't the Bengals last in the league in defense?
"Steelers Horse"
You can edit the thread title yourself, I think, 86Ward. Just hit the edit button on your first post and you can change it there, I believe, where your threat title is.
Must be another friend of Tomlin.
Austin was fired by the Bengals in midseason, a bad first impression in his first year with the team.

That's definitely not a "culture" move. The Bengals defense is a bunch of punks.
"You've heard people brag about 'being in the zone'. They don't know what the Hell being in the zone is about. I played in the NFL for 15 years and I was only in the zone that one time." - "Mean" Joe Greene on the 1974 playoff victory over Oakland
Wait, the Bengals fire him and we hire him?
The optimistic view, knowing how the Bengals roll, would be if the Bengals thought so little of him, the opposite must be true and he’s very talented.
And I believe in unicorns.
Good move IMO. Teryl Austin is a well regarded defensive back coach. He had good runs with the Seahawks when they went to the Super Bowl XL, then the Cardinals when they again met the Steelers in the Super Bowl and next the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl vs the 49ers.
We Steeler fans are so "beaten op" & bullshitted to that we don't trust anybody. I include myself in this group. I am asking myself who is making these decisions. It concerns me that the worst decision maker I know of is in fact making these decisions and is also the one who is not going to make changes where he should. Bubble gum anybody.
Agreed, The guy has been DB coach on 3 separate teams that went to the Super Bowl, then he became DC in Detroit where Glover Quinn and Darius Slay both had pro bowl seasons in his secondary. He is pretty much the best DB coach the Steelers have had since Ray Horton. Maybe not the best DC, but a great DB coach.
If you have a problem with this hire, then you just don't know how good Austin is, or you are a flat out pessimist. (or both).
Munchak couldn’t cut it as a HC, but he’s an excellent O-line coach.
Wade Phillips couldn’t cut it as a HC, but he’s an excellent DC.
Norv Turner couldn’t cut it as a HC, but he’s an excellent OC.
Teryl Austin couldn’t cut it as a DC, but he’s an excellent DBs coach.
Steelers need all the coaching help they can get since the only current assistant coach who clearly is top tier may be headed to Denver with the always popular explanation he wants to spend more time with his family.
So if Austin is the best DB coach the Steelers have had since Horton where would that leave Tom Bradley?
Steelers allegedly concluded they had too many LB coaches and may not fill the Porter vacancy by having Butler becoming more involved with LBs but now are going to have two coaches try to figure out how to split oversight of the DBs?
Seems to be some internal inconsistency there assuming Steelers simply do not want to concede Bradley did not work out but do not want to fire him
Meanwhile no indication Tomlin is going to admit he needs some help on challenges and have some current or new coach be upstairs to watch replays to help out with that ongoing cluster
It leaves Bradley as the DB coach and Austin as somebody that will work with Bradley to improve the DB group and play. It also leaves Austin on the staff to become the possible Defensive Coordinator if Butler stumbles.
As D coordinator, Austin played an aggressive 4-3 in Detroit with Suh, Nick Fairley, DeAndre Levy when he arrived in 2014, but lost those big playmakers on the front 7, but while transitioning up front the 2017 Detroit Lions finished 3rd in takeaways with Darrius Slay and Glover Quinn in the secondary.
So a talented DB coach became available on the open market and he signed with the Steelers …...what is the possible downside that fans here would like to complain about?
yeah, I can see why keeping Butler is the absolute must in this entire situation.
Some people have a rare skill of being able to find problems with everything and point them out....but not offer a possible solution. They are highly valued in the worlds of business, science, technology and Steelers Message Boards.
I am not complaining just asking if it creates more opportunity for uncertainty about who reports to who
The secondary needs improvement but so does Tomlin getting some outside input on challenges
With Butler staying do not see anything yet that impacts what Tomlin has been doing - which is fine with me - if he goes down in 2019 he can choose who is on deck with him when the ship sinks
Let's see what he can do with Artie Burns.
