Roethlisberger and Steelers shock Jaguars with epic comeback

Ben Roethlisberger finally slew the Jacksonville dragon with his hard-nosed play.

To cap a brilliant fourth quarter, Roethlisberger stretched the nose of the football across the goal line on a diving 1-yard touchdown run with three seconds left as the Pittsburgh Steelers shocked the Jaguars 20-16 on Sunday.

After a rough three quarters that featured three Roethlisberger turnovers, the Steelers' offense was unbelievable on two scoring drives spanning 148 yards to clinch the victory.

Roethlisberger conceded he played a "horrible game.".............

He was throwing behind receivers the entire first half. He was just off with his throws and he threw 3 INT's.

What makes great quarterbacks great is the way they are able to overcome mistakes or bad play. He made adjustments to regain his accuracy, but more importantly.....he never stopped firing the ball into tight coverage. He never lost that confidence and faded away like lesser quarterbacks do.

The Jags were desperate and playing out of their minds in the secondary. They were all over WR's all day.

This was a day when a great winner found a way to win.

The entire team fought and clawed for everything the entire day. That was a great....great Steelers win.

IT was the first game of the season I planned to sit down and watch. I ended up switching over to Big Country with Gregory Peck after 40 minutes because the way the Steelers were playing as a whole did not deserve my time.

Probably the smart move. That game wasn't good for my blood pressure. I am kinda surprised that you don't watch games, tho'. I assumed everyone here watched every Steeler game.

Isnt that the truth! I can think of multiple throws to McDonald that were off, open throws to JuJu, Conner, AB that were off. Switzer and Washington had to dive for a couple receptions.

I was concerned that Ben's sideline body language looked like he was just having a bad day and wasn't going to snap out of it. I think the long TD by AB gave them all the confidence that they could score that quickly again.

I really think this team was in his head. Ben tends to be inaccurate when he is either hurt or thinking too much. He doesn't seem to be hurt, so I believe he was "overthinking" every throw in order to avoid the turnover. He was late on some throws as well. To me, all signs of a guy who isn't trusting what his eyes are telling him.

I know this is the kind of "armchair psychology" I rail against, but I can't remember the last regular season game that didn't eliminate the Steelers or clinch them something, that Ben was that emotional on the sidelines. He had a death grip on that game ball!

Funny you pointed that out. I was thinking the same thing and he was definitely not letting that ball go. He was pretty excited in that Carolina game as well...

Re: Roethlisberger and Steelers shock Jaguars with epic comeback

After the Jags went up 16-0, I thought there was no hope already. Especially since our drive before that, we couldn't even score after being gifted good field position and aided by 30 penalty yards. I thought that TD the defense gave up was fatigue starting to kick in and they finally cracked.

EVERYTHING that went on in the game pointed to a sure loss. Hell, Jacksonville was even getting the lucky bounces going their way, I certainly didn't see this coming. It's the worst I've seen them play all season, and Ben looked like he was having the typical "vs the Jags" game. It's almost like Ben signed a secret deal with the Jaguars ownership to always play bad vs them, since it seems like no matter what their roster looks like, he never plays well against them

But this was as sweet a win as there could be. They ended our season last year, now we ended theirs in the most painful way possible. That team was getting cocky and jawing at our players like they had the win in the bag, and then we took the lead with 2 seconds to go. That HAS to sting lol. But I hope we don't make a habit of getting ourselves into this kind of situation again, it's not good for my stress levels. I had to sign off the forum partially through the 3rd quarter cause I was just ready to go on profanity-laden tirades haha.

You nailed it. Ben just wasn't letting the ball go in rhythm. He was hanging onto every throw. Guys weren't open often. And a couple guys dropped passed on third down. Things weren't going well.

The Jags style of play and personnel clearly bothers Ben and affects the entire team.

The team made great adjustments at halftime.

Offensively, the best adjustment they made was getting to the line quickly and letting Ben really get a chance to call something, see the defense, get a good look at what they were trying to do, then make any audibles or calls just before the snap. It's almost like he was finally seeing everything for the first time. After that, he was more decisive and accurate with his throws and he started lighting them up.

Whatever the game plans are going into these games need to be burned, because they play right into the Jags hands with playcalling, and tight formations. The Jags have dominated early in games when that is how the Steelers play offense.

Once the team gets down, Ben starts to run things as he can do, they spread them out and stop huddling up, and they start to light the Jags defense up. That is how they need to come out of the gate when they play them. We have seen this show before. I hope going forward the approach to how they attack the Jags uses this blueprint to give Ben those advantages and play to his strengths while also incorporating the power running game and stop with the finesse delayed draws trying to fool the defense. Let Ben throw the ball, but use the power run game enough that you can then go to play action which will open other things up as well.

I thought the coaching staff's game plan was terrible, but they made great adjustments on the fly. That's what good coaches do...and that's what good teams do. They just figure out a way to do enough to win.

I didn't think we'd win but the Steeler defense kept playing tough.

At 16-0, I thought we'd make it close and maybe tie.

I have been watching every Steeler game possible since 1972. The whole political thing, Bell, plus the fact the Steelers were not ready to play on opening day allowed me to make an easy decision to do something more productive with my time. Yesterday was the first time I had a few hours to actually watch a game. Should have gone to the beach instead even though they decided to show up by the end of the 3rd quarter. They should have put the Jags away by the end of the half.

What I noticed is when the Steelers started throwing vertical against the Jags they had success. Jags D was just to good over the middle. Maybe a game plan in the future how to beat them.

Any time you can win when Ben's not playing well, like he did in the first three quarters, you take it and get out of Dodge. Plus, with the Ravens giving the Bengals loss #5 that was a nice bonus on the day.

    ALLD,
Can't fault ya for that. I boycotted the season with Michael Vick.

Re: Roethlisberger and Steelers shock Jaguars with epic comeback

Jags-Steelers is starting to get a little bit of last decade's Ravens-Steelers saltiness

Ben Roethlisberger: Jaguars' Telvin Smith kept saying 'how bad I was'

"[Smith] likes to talk out there,” Roethlisberger said. “After I threw the first pick, he came up to me and said 'That's one,' and made sure that I knew what he was talking about. And the second one, same thing. He went out of his way, like he ran toward our sideline to find me. And the same thing on the third one — he just went out of his way to let me know how many interceptions they had, and how many I threw, and how bad I was.

"And I never said a word, just kind of kept going to our sideline and after we scored that third touchdown, I was holding on to that ball and I was looking for him. Wanted to let him know that I had the game ball. But I didn't find him. Probably wasn't the smartest move."

    Wow, I didn't know that.

But I did hear that he actually created an artificial life form and with that Artificial Intelligence that he named Al Gore, he invented the internet. Steelers still should have put him in after the 2nd INT.

Amazing, Florio speaking positive about Ben, king thinks Ben should be at #2 on the MVP list of QBs at about the 20 second mark
