Simple. Supreme Court nominees. There is a distinct difference in the judges. Republicans put up judges that tend to be closer to judicial restraint (although not always). Democrats tend to put up judges who are closer to judicial activism (although again, not always). Their decisions are much more far-reaching that congress. One decision a few years ago freed the police from having to defend the public. Another decision started the move to desegregation while still another allowed your city government take away your house (and compensate you) just because they've chosen to build a tax-revenue based building there (such as a mall).
In fact, that's pretty much the only reason I still vote.
