Odell Beckham gets 95M and becomes NFLs highest paid receiver

This day was a long time coming, with many bumps along the way. But finally, the Odell Beckham Jr. contract saga has come to an end.

The Giants signed their enigmatic wide receiver to a five-year contract extension on Monday worth $95 million, with $65 million guaranteed. The deal for the 25-year-old is the richest for a receiver in NFL history, with an annual price tag of $19 million topping the Steelers’ four-year deal with Antonio Brown at $17 million per, and surpasses the $55 million guaranteed given to the Buccaneers’ Mike Evans............

As long as the cap continues to climb - this is all fine and the numbers work out fine for all parties involved.

However, the current TV deal expires after 2022 (I think) and the CBA runs out after the 2020 season.

IF those were to both be renegotiated with significant downward adjustments to the available dollars for the NFL then all these big money deals are gonna be terrifying.

However, if current trends hold, 3 years from now when Beckham is only 28 or 29 and the cap has increased by several tens of millions of dollars, this deal will be a bargain. Similar to how as each new big-time WR contract is signed, AB's deal looks better and better...

Unless the NFL finds a new source of revenue there is no way it will support stratospheric salaries into infinity. Ticket prices are already too expensive.

Only roughly 16% of the leagues revenue comes from ticket sales.

Basically all a team has to do is take in enough ticket revenue to break even on whatever their stadium operating expenses are and they would still make money because of the TV deals.

I know he's immensely talented, but that is A LOT of money for a WR, particularly a hot-headed low character drama magnet

    Exactly.

I remember when a starting QB signed a 5 year/$25 million deal... and the sports world went nuts about how much he was making. Ohmygawd!!!... this is ridiculous!!!

Twenty years later, $5 million per season is what you pay a backup QB.

And to think the Steelers tried to trade up to draft OBJ in 14' to pair him with AB.

    Would've been just insane.

Johnny Unitas’ 1956 Baltimore Colts Rookie Contract

Drafted by his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers with the 102nd pick in the 1955 NFL Draft, Johnny Unitas never made it to the preseason with his beloved team.

After a year of semi-pro football, he received a tryout from the Baltimore Colts prior to the 1956 season. This one-year, $7,000 contract was fully UN-guaranteed. He earned 75% of his check in weekly $437.50 increments–basically per game base salaries. No play, no pay. The remaining $1,750 would be paid if Unitas made it to the end of the season.

As time told, Unitas would play 17 of his 18 NFL seasons with the franchise, finishing his career with a Super Bowl, two NFL Championships, 10 Pro Bowls and three MVP awards. He threw for 40,239 yards and 290 touchdowns and was inducted into the @ProFootballHOF in 1979.
