Re: What does the 53 look like?

My prediction as things stand right now:

QB - Ben, Jones, Rudolph (3)

Pretty straight forward. Dobbs isn't making it but I do think they will try and keep him on the PS because Jones is probably gone after this season.

    RB - Bell, Conner, Toussaint/Ridley, Nix (4)

Haven't really been sold on Samuels since day 1. I would personally pick Toussaint but they seem high on Ridley so it is a tough guess

WR - Brown, JuJu, Washington, DHB, Hunter (5)

The first 4 are locks. Hunter I am not sold on but Tomlin likes him and if Patterson keeps playing at this level he will either bump Hunter or they will keep 6.

TE - McDonald, James, Grimble (3)

Nothing is going to change here unless McDonald is hurt more than we know and they go outside to get a guy.

OL - Villanueva, Foster, Pouncey, Decastro, Gilbert, Okorafor, Finney, Feiler (8)

Again, pretty straight forward. Barring an injury I am not sure anyone else squeezes on

    Offense - 23

DL - Tuitt, Hargrave, Heyward, Alualu, Walton, McCullers (6)

The only real question here was who number 6 would be and it looks more and more like McCullers is a new man. Even took some reps with the 1's yesterday

OLB - Watt, Dupree, Chick, Adams, Adeniyi (5)

Maybe the hardest position for me to determine. Nobody is standing out all that much but they have to keep someone right? Huegenin is actually ahead of both but I am not seeing that.

ILB - Williams, Bostic, Red, Fort, Thomas (5)

Haven't really been with keeping 5 here but I think all have shown enough to deserve a spot to this point.

    S - Davis, Burnett, Edmunds, Behre (4)

CB - Burns, Haden, Hilton, Sutton, Allen, Sensabaugh (6)

Sensabaugh has been doing work and I already thought he would potentially make it. Now I am pretty certain it will happen.

    Defense - 26

ST - Boz, Berry, Canaday (3)

    ST - 3

So that puts me at 52. Here are the potentials I would have as the 53

RB - They are giving Samuels every chance to make it but could we get a shocker and they keep both Toussaint and Ridley and put Samuels on the PS? Not sure but one way or the other I think there is a high chance at a 4th RB

WR - Do they like Hunter enough to keep him and add a 6th in Patterson if he continues the trend? Marcus Tucker may become the forgotten man but he did have a nice block and some good ST play. He needs to make some splash on offense though.

S - I know the obvious choice for a lot of people would be Allen but he is WAY down the depth chart. Could this be another place we are surprised and maybe Malik Golden makes it? Basically every safety we have is moe of a SS type and Golden is closer to an FS type. Will be interesting to watch.

Similar to what Cyphon stated, the 53rd spot will come down to Marcus Allen, Damoun Patterson, and Sex Machihe.

Patterson has the lead. The other two are PS bound unless something changes during the next 3 games.

Solid. Don't forget Hodges in that TE battle also. And if Henderson is going to make the 53, most analysts say it will be as the returner.

Who's that? He should make it based on that alone if you ask me.

Well I don't really think there is a battle at TE unless it is for a PS spot. The 3 are locks unless there is an injury.

Henderson I would put at 0% chance at making the roster. There is very little value in a return man (what did he have, 1 KR and 2 downed punts or something?) and he gets no burn on offense.

I think Grimble and Hodges will battle for that 3rd spot. I remember Grimble was sent home for being out of shape one TC, maybe it was 2 but I know once. AND he is used very sparingly anyway. Hodges apparently has zero skill as a blocker with no desire to learn any. But he is productive as a pass catcher. I think one of them falls off and one sticks. If McGee were healthy I think he would beat them both for the 3rd spot.

Probably right about Henderson. I just read and hear talk of him making a spot as the KR and PR. Guess we'll have to see.

as I said in another thread , Rudolph was getting time with the 1's and 2's ahead of Jones yesterday at camp , its up to you what you might read into that

Hodges is a specimen , he is so much bigger than AB and just as fast ( not as quick ) spent a lot of time lingering around Ben trying to learn what the QB likes/wants ... that said he did attempt to block in drills , was not great at it but he was making effort

Henderson muffed a punt at camp yesterday , those little mistakes even in a practice setting stick in the minds of coaches , he certainly didn't do himself any favors because if he is to make the roster it WILL be for his special teams value
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles problem now

I guess I could concede to an outside shot for Hodges but I would put it at like 15% chance. He is coming in late and having to learn the system and is basically competing against a similar type so he doesn't necessarily offer anything different. Grimble is that sort of big play every once in awhile guy that has never found consistency but he does know the system and the Steelers seem to like him. I think you are right about McGee but I am mainly going by the Depot reports of him being a strong blocker. I think that is something the Steelers would go for.

Personally, I read absolutely nothing into that. A) Shuffling players into the #1 squad is just part of the evaluation process and B) Rudolph isn't competing with Jones for the backup QB slot.

    I wouldn't count on it ...

the more work he gets with the 1's the more apt he is to over take Jones ( really shouldn't be that hard to do as Jones just isn't good )

    and today

Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles problem now

and like I posted in the Dobbs thread , this may not be directed at the Steelers but the premise stands here too ( or should anyways )
