    NFL Reveals Recommendations to Simplify Catch Rule

    https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/03/20/nf...nition-changes

    The proposal seeks to define a catch as:

    1. Control of the ball.

    2. Two feet down or another body part.

    3. A football move such as:

    • A third step;

    • Reaching/extending for the line-to-gain

    • Or the ability to perform such an act.

    I prefer to use instant replay only for determining a fumble, if a player crossed the goal line, or caught a ball in bounds. Because, in the end, it is Instant Replay that is causing all these other issues. The ability to analyze to the nth degree means the rules must be written to cover every little possibility. It's taken out what used to be an important element in the game: showmanship. What do I mean by that? It used to be that a player could put his back to an official and let the ball hit the ground on a pass, but as long as the official didn't see it, it was still a catch. It spoke to the skills of the player not only in catching, but in knowing how to position himself so he had a better chance of a good call.

    I'd rather see us go back to that.
