Holy craps!
With Smith in the fold, after the two sides finalize the agreement Wednesday, the Redskins are expected to let Kirk Cousins walk, making him the most intriguing free-agent quarterback on the market.
Soon after the trade was reported, Smith agreed to a four-year contract with the Redskins, according to ESPN.
Several teams in need of a franchise quarterback could pursue the 29-year-old Cousins, including the Jets. Cousins spoke highly of new Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates earlier Tuesday, dropping the first hint of a possible union.
Cousins could be in line to sign a large contract after throwing for 4,093 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2017. The Redskins showed last season they weren’t ready to invest fully in Cousins, using the franchise tag on him instead of inking him to a long-term deal.
Though Smith, 33, set career highs in touchdowns (26) and passing yards (4,042) last season, the Chiefs appear committed to their first-round draft pick, Patrick Mahomes, as their quarterback of the future.

Well, looks like Washington is gearing up to be disappointing for the next four years.
See you Space Cowboy ...
Sucks for Washington, the last time Alex Smith had a supporting cast that wasn't talented like Washington's, he was booed, benched, and considered an epic draft bust
The Chiefs just pulled off a heist.

I'm more interested in who's going to overpay for Cousins. Bradford, Siemian, Lynch, Osweiler, Tyrod, Bridgewater, Keenum, even Bortles will probably all be open for trade talks as well.
Yep - Chiefs were going to move on from Smith and Kendall Fuller is regarded as a very good CB
And WTF is Danny Snyder thinking by throwing this sort of contract at Smith
It's hard to feel great about paying a quarterback who turns 34 in May an average of $23.5 million per year. Smith will receive $71 million guaranteed.

Washington paying that amount to Smith no doubt confirms to Le'Veon Bell and his agent to hold out for top $$ from the Steelers since there always is another team willing to overpay for name brand talent
Why not pay Cousins and keep Fuller and the 3rd round pick.
Nobody accused Snyder of being smart.
Chiefs paid too much to trade up to draft Mahomes to let him sit on his rookie contract and know they were never going to the Super Bowl with Smith - unlike teams like the Bengals they are not willing to tread water while regarding another one and done playoff run as a great season.
Given the ongoing playoff crashes the fanbase probably is willing to tolerate a step back for potential future benefits rather than watch another rerun of past flameouts with Smith. Question now is how many years ownership gives Andy Reid to get it done.
Can the Chiefs afford to sign Cousins as a Free Agent? That would be something... they could then trade Mahomes to the Browns or some Team like that. And a slap in the Face of the Redskins.
Because I agree, that move could mean that the Chiefs go from contender to struggling to even make the Postseason. Mahomes is not proven and can still be a bust. Cousins on the other hand is a really good QB, and has played well even with some bad supporting cast in Washington. On the other Hand, Smith probably would have never taken the Chiefs to the Super Bowl... and Mahomes may also become the real deal.
But if Cousins signs with the Broncos, the Chiefs could be in trouble...
Snyder being snyder
Who's Alex Smith even going to throw to? They've got Reed at TE and Pryor, who was a huge disappointment this year, and not much else. Doctson hasn't been that good. No proven guy at HB either. Good luck with that Snyder!

Big time move for the chiefs. It’s time to see what the second year QB can do while he still has a good roster to support him. And they get back a draft pick and a starting young corner.
I don’t see alex smith being better than cousins. But he is cheaper and he doesn’t turn the ball over. However Alex smith isn’t playing the quarterbackless broncos, the chargers, and the up and down raiders anymore. He moves to the NFC east. They have the giants who are about to add a young new QB (maybe Rosen) with OBJ, the cowboys who will have zeke all year, oh ya and the NFC champs philly. I don’t see alex smith being worth 20 plus million.

In what sets up as an offseason game of chicken that would markedly influence the quarterback market, the Washington Redskins will consider placing their franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins so they can trade him and recoup some of the compensation they are sending to Kansas City for quarterback Alex Smith, per league sources.

Good luck with that - Cousins has all the leverage
