    Mularkey gone in Tennessee

Smart move by the Titans ownership - Mariota has not progressed as far as a high first round QB pick should and Titans now are competing in a tough division with Jax and the Deshaun Watson Texans

Mike Mularkey has agreed to part ways with the Tennessee Titans, who announced Monday that the sides "couldn't come to an agreement over the future."

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk acknowledged in a statement that the organization has been discussing a potential contract extension with Mularkey, who coached Tennessee to its first postseason appearance since 2008.

But the talks revealed that Mularkey and the Titans "saw different paths to achieve greater success," according to Adams Strunk. General manager Jon Robinson is expected to address the decision during a news conference later Monday.

Wonder if seeing "different paths to achieve greater success" included firing LeBeau?

So I guess that opens the door for LeBeau to come back to the Steelers as DC and Mularkey to return as OC?

With another HC vacancy that presumably increases the chance of Arizona hiring coach Munchak if other preferred candidates go elsewhere

I just wonder what this "path to success" is that the Titans' ownership sees. Didn't they have the same basic issue with Munchak? Maybe they can rehire Fisher.

Wow a coach couldn't get his QB to the mountain and gets fired. Imagine if we did that as well.

What is crazy about the Titans doing this, is they were getting closer every season. They actually made the playoffs, went 5-1 in their division, and swept the Jags. Not sure why they think Lebeau's defense was going to stop the Pats, it never did before. They were building a pretty good team there. Just a few pieces away from being very good. This is just odd, IMO. Would love to hear more of the conversation that lead to this.

Please please please sign Todd Haley, Titans.

They already took Antwon Blake .

This is a good move. Mularkey isn't a good coach, he never has been a good coach dating back to his ill-fated stints in Buffalo and Jacksonville. The Titans underachieved. With the young talent they had and the easy schedule they had, they should have won at least 10 games and should have outscored their opponents on the year, not allow numerous shitty teams to take them down to the wire and barely make the playoffs in a god-awful conference.

I don't know. The Titans went 5-1 in their division, AND won a road playoff game. I don't think they under-achieved at all. That's why this is a bit of a shocker to me. The Titans have improved.

5-1 in the AFC South isn't something to brag about, and they benefited from Travis Kelce getting injured, choke specialist Andy Reid not giving the ball to Kareem Hunt in the 2nd half, and playing a team in the Chiefs that specializes in choking. Wildcard participant in a weak conference and a fluky playoff win was this team's ceiling under Mike Mularkey, if they wanted to go farther, they needed to try and find someone better

Is a coaches ability measured by his success, or the failures of other coaches? 5-1 in your division is success. Winning a road playoff game is a success. How is that under-achieving?

Obviously this decision comes down to the development of Mariota. Mariota was not great this season by any measure.

    I thought so too

So of course they hire Mike Vrabel, DC for Houston, as the new HC to fix that

The Patriots way is a big deal here, as [Titans GM Jon] Robinson and Vrabel spent seven years in New England together. They won two Super Bowls during that time, with Vrabel a player and Robinson a coach.

Ah yes - the Patriots Way, which has resulted in the epic head coaching triumphs of Belichick assistants Weis, Crennel, Mangini and McDaniels

Texans defense was hot garbage this past year, yes I know they missed Watt and Mercilus for much of the year last year, but keep in mind they missed Watt for almost the entire year in 2016 and still finished 1st (Vrabel was only Texans DC this past year). Not a smart move

    Re: Mularkey gone in Tennessee

This hire does not make ANY sense. The talk has been Mularkey was let go because the FO wanted to replace coordinators, and Mularkey refused their candidates. I haven't heard those names, although I haven't done any thorough search on it. I did hear the owners group had a lot of eggs in the McDaniel basket. Maybe Vrabel was more inclined to the 'recommended' coordinators? Hmmm too bad for Titan's fans. The puppet master ownership/puppet head coach system has not been a very successful recipe in the NFL. And the Titans were starting to play so well.
