Santonio Holmes retired from the NFL in the place his career began

Holmes: 'It was a dream come true'

Santonio Holmes spent nine seasons in the NFL, with three different teams, but in his heart he will always think of himself as a Steelers’ receiver.

That is why on Tuesday Holmes officially announced his retirement from the NFL at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, retiring from the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

“I wanted to do it to pay respect and honor to an organization that gave me an opportunity,” said Holmes. “No matter where I travel, I will always be remembered as the Pittsburgh Steelers receiver who caught one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history.”

Congratulations on your retirement, Santonio. Enjoy!

He was not perfect but he was sure hard to beat as a play maker. I loved it when he was with us and the chemistry between him and Ben was like no other. I wish him well on his future endeavors.

Yeah there are much better shots than that one. Any way you look at it though... it's beautiful.

Indeed. Whenever I’m having a bad moment, I look at that photo... and I’m back to having a good day. LOL

The thing I liked most is that he was shouting "It's time to be great" BEFORE he made those plays. He was truly able to rise to the occasions. It's one thing to run your mouth before and not show up, or after once you've done well, but he shouted before and came through.

I liked him as a receiver because he was a playmaker and was pretty clutch when he had to be.

That catch was the margin of victory, but Harrison's Immaculate Interception was better. My money is on Holmes taking a a long vacation on the couch with a bag of weed.

    Very, very close

My photo is zoomed in so that all that you see is Santonio (and the shoulder pads of the guys next to him).

Man. Oh Man. I will never be certain that he got both those feet down!

I remember a roomful of football fans, Steeler and non-Steeler, all looking at each other and going "Was that in?" I also remembering everyone hoping it was because of how amazing an ending it made for an already epic SB.

Reminds me of when Franco always says he'll never tell if the ball touched the grown on the Immaculate Reception (with a big ass grin)

Meh, great signature catch, but mediocre career.

Domestic abuse charges, substance abuse policy and traded for a 5th round pick because he couldn't put down the bong. Not really the kind of athlete that I would admire or celebrate. Hope he has good perspective on life now.

Well, that 5th round pick was traded away. In return, the Steelers got Bryant McFadden back, and a 6th round pick that turned out to be AB. So, you can say that for that late first round pick, we got a guy that was a key player in winning our 6th Lombardi, plus the greatest receiver in Steeler history. Pretty good deal if you ask me.
