Dulac: Steelers Close To Reaching Deal With Tuitt

It’s been one of the busiest weeks in recent Pittsburgh Steelers’ history. But there’s still one more move we’re waiting to be announced. A long-term deal with DE Stephon Tuitt. It sounds like that’s going to happen in the very near future.

In his weekly chat, the PPG’s Gerry Dulac had this response to a question about Tuitt getting a deal done with the team.

“JP from Va.: With the trades being done, how close are the Steelers and Tuitt to a extension of his rookie contract?
Gerry Dulac: Very close. Should be any day now.”

I hope this is true....Dulac was right on Decastro last year too.

    This needs to get done

Anytime up until kickoff Sunday will comply with the Steelers rule they do not negotiate once the season starts

Troy signed his last contract at the airport on Saturday prior to the 2011 season opener in Baltimore

Of course in retrospect Steelers overpaid Troy - as is the case with Bell, Steelers will not bust the budget just to get a deal with Tuitt

They should have all stayed home that day. They got blown out by the Ratbirds in that game

    EDIT:

They have plenty of space still to sign Tuitt.

The 2011 season was a cluster from that start to the finish (Tebow!)

Midseason lowlight was gaving up a long end of the game drive to lose the Ravens Sunday night rematch in November, which was the beginning of the end for both Arians (Steelers could not get a first down to run out the clock because BA was passing) and the great LeBeau defenses

And Tomlin did not trust his kicker for a 47 yards field goal ta take the lead by 7 points....

I still say that was one of the weakest 12-4 teams ever. The game vs Indy was a near disaster. They had to send Troy on several blitzes vs Curtis freaking Painter to finally seal the game.

They barely beat Tyler Palko and the Chiefs that year. Tyler Palko.

Then the lights go out in San Francisco.

Add in the Tebow debacle and it was just a strange year.

Still $11 million in cap space to keep possibly the most key player on the defense. I am very glad we're in that position for a change.

These are the kinds of moves you can make when you're not paying your linebackers $10 million each, and don't have $20 million worth of funny money tied up in restructures or dead cap space. And of course, when you have recent draft picks who are actually playing.
    See you Space Cowboy ...

If Tuitt is signed, that leaves Bell as the biggest name UFA on the Steelers for 2018. After Bell, it is a small list of minor players.

The end of that Ravens game was a rare miscue by Ryan Clark.

Losing that game meant that the Steelers had to play a hobbled BB in San Fran (instead of resting him/getting him healthy for the playoffs). In turn, at the end of the Denver game, BB was on the cusp of game-winning FG range. Then, two sacks and an errant throw to Heath Miller led to a tie (as opposed to a win), which set up the infamous "D.Thomas - Ike Taylor stiff arm".

A season that can be summed up with the e phrase: "Oh, what could have been."

If the office has $11m in cap space, pay the man already and give a bump to the Heyward too. Then they should thank Bell because that's his $ he turned down.

My guess is the Steelers plan had money for Tuitt even if Bell signed since Tuitt was a prime offseason target for a new deal - Bell turning down the offer gave them the flexibility to immediately move on Haden then have time to do any rearranging necessary to finalize Tuitt's deal
