second round draft pick last year.
Al Davis hit the jackpot by drafting punter Ray Guy in the first round in the early 70s - teams seeking to copy that by burning high draft choices on kickers since then have seen little success
Steelers contribution to this list of failures was trading up to pick Daniel Supelveda in the fourth round in Tomlin's first draft class in 2007
Drafting kickers or punters is rarely a good idea. The chance that you get even a decent kicker/punter is probably even lower than by trying out guys from the street. Plus, next to nobody else will do that. That the Bucs drafted Aguayo was totally nuts, because nobody else would have drafted him before the 7th round. Never ever.
Raiders are good now. they have younger Carr at QB and can compete.
All Defense!
Wasn't just a 2nd round pick, Tampa traded up to draft him in round 2(sent the Chiefs their 3rd, and 4th round pick).
1. Graham Barton, C, Duke 2. Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida 3. Maason Smith, DT, LSU 3. Max Melton, CB, Rutgers 4. Blake Fisher, OT, Notre Dame 6. Tommy Eichenberg, ILB, Ohio State 6. MJ Devonshire, CB, Pittsburgh
If this is a 6 round draft pick, I have no problem to draft a punter or a field goal kicker, but when this is early in the draft this is another story, since you can find a very good kicker/punter , even as a undrafted free agent.
The Jaguars have made the same mistakes in 2012 by drafting a punter early in the 3rd round, when this team had so many need.
Different team,same result...
