It's like the old days when everything turned into an O line thread. Look above kids....this is about Bryant.....start a new thread if necessary.
That might actually be Willie Gay. Considering the Steelers having been "spamming" picks at slot CB (Golson, Sutton, Hilton, Sensabaugh, etc) for several seasons now and specifically listed "Gay, William" as one of the main reasons that the couldn't play everyone's coveted man coverage schemes last season in the playoffs -- I don't get the Cockerell hate.
Sure if Cock is your #1 then maybe you have some hard times ahead, but if Cock is your #2 then it might not be so hard.
Plus AJ Green doesn't like Cock and AJ Green is pretty darn good...
Same for me....Cockrell is not the best, but he is far to be the worse.....
read moreA fourth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2014, Cockrell didn’t make it in Buffalo before playing 1,953 snaps for the Steelers over the past two seasons and starting all 2016. He didn’t record an interception in 2016, but did break up 10 passes and allowed just two scores over 93 total targets including the playoffs. Cockrell has size and range, and didn’t allow a reception longer than 37 yards all season, despite facing some elite receivers.

Have you seen Blake against us in the last game?
A player who will not make the team (Cody Hamilton) beat Blake twice for 72 yards.36 yards per reception and a TD.
Cockrell is not the best, but compared him to Blake is disrespectful.I do not understand the hate about him in the last few weeks.

And it's not just the last week
This is the entire 2015 season where the steelers finished 30th against the pass in yards and last year without Blake the steelers finished 12th in yards against the pass.
Cockrell=new whipping boy.

I don't think cockrell is good but he is still better than Blake. Blake may be the worst cb in NFL history.
Also I think safety is weaker. Davis is the only good safety on this team. Mitchell gets paid a lot and does nothing but get out of position and attempt to tackle with one shoulder. Golden and Dangerfield meanwhile can't cover their asses with a pair of pants
I understand some of the concerns with the secondary, but I think the bashing of Cockrell is just silly.
Cockrell was forced to be the #1 corner and routinely followed the opponents best WR all over the field. He is not a #1 from a talent perspective, but he held up pretty well in his role. For crying out loud...give the guy a break.
Now that Burns has established himself as the #1 CB, I think it solidifies the secondary and provides the opportunity for the defense to take a big step forward.
Burns is a year more experienced, and you can see he has worked on his strength and his craft.
Cockrell is a hard worker who was forced to be a #1, but is now able to be a #2 corner.
There is now young talent competing for the remaining CB positions, and Gay is the veteran if they choose to keep his experience. Having Sutton, Hilton, and Allen as young, raw talent with pure cover skills is exciting to me, and knowing that someone with that kind of talent may not make the roster should encourage everyone that the talent level has taken a significant step forward. You can even see a guy like Brian Allen coming from the practice squad that can contribute if he continues to progress with his size. He can match up in the right situations because of his size and press cover ability.
Davis looks to be ready to start being a consistent playmaker for this defense in his second year.
Mitchell played much better as the year went on and Davis was inserted into the starting lineup. I think their chemistry will be much better this year, and the secondary will help the defense make more stops and get off the field.
There are plenty of reason to be positive about the direction of the secondary.

Great post pzach
I am probably the most confident person on this forum on this defense.
This defense has enormous potential and I have high expectations in them this year.
I can not believe that Cockrell was comparing to Antwon Blake .... WOW
No, I hate betting, but Jesse James has not have the potential to have at least 10 yards per catch. If James does that(10 yards per catch or more) with 30-40 catch, I'll be glad to say I have been wrong, but I do not bet because I hate it.
In the last few weeks, Jesse James is the most overrated steelers and Cockrell is the most underrated, especially when I saw someone compare him with Antwon Blake !!!!
I still can not believe
Cocky got graded out by PFF as a top 25 corner the past two seasons.
Jesse James is still trying to figure out how to run block.
That's not even a contest.
Sure hope we draft a TE next year!
