When you’ve lived charmed lives as sports fans for 32 years — and the Penguins, largely, have graced their fanbase with that — the hiccups tend to stick out.


There’ve been fallow periods between superstars — 2003 comes to mind — and arena battles, ownership issues and postseason disappointments, but they’re generally easy to list, and when the list is complete, it isn’t long. There have been more good times than bad, to an overwhelming degree.


That makes the bad times more memorable. That’s why people here remember David Volek’s name. And that’s why. for a franchise that’s made its name on transcendent offensive talent, free-flowing play and goals, “The Trap” brings up so much negativity.........
