Tomlin takes heat for late-game calls

Keeping quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the AFC wild-card game Sunday with the Steelers protecting an 18-point lead late in the fourth quarter was coach Mike Tomlin's call.

So was the decision to pass on third down, the play in which Roethlisberger injured his right ankle while being brought down by Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Cameron Wake.

Roethlisberger sported a walking boot after the game but said Tuesday he will play against the Kansas City Chiefs in a divisional playoff game Sunday.

Tomlin took responsibility for the play calling at his weekly news conference and absolved offensive coordinator Todd Haley of any wrongdoing.
“I got a little overaggressive there,” Tomlin said. “It goes beyond taking responsibility. I made the call, so don't ask Todd about it on Thursday.” ...........

I know you're not asking Todd. You were just told not to. You've been told. So who are you asking?

I hope some one (Tomlin, Haley, Ben whoever) learned from the 'dodged' bullet !

Being up 18 with 4 minutes to go is a good problem to have. I hope it happens again Sunday.

The biggest problem is that the WR ran the wrong route and exposed Ben. But Ben should've thrown it away and problem solved.

I love that gif. It deserves a place where we can see it all the time.

Ben has just never learned to throw the ball away. It's one of his faults. Sometimes it's a good thing and sometimes it's bad.
I believe the game is designed to reward the ones who hit the hardest. If you can't take it, you shouldn't play!- Jack Lambert

Exactly. Ben bears the greatest responsibility for being hit on that play. Still... in the 4th I was saying to the TV "Rest Bell. Put in Williams. You FINALLY have Bell so you play him in garbage time against cheapshotting Suh? Why is Shazier in? Same thing. OMG will you just sit Ben let Landry hand off to D Will?!"

I think a lot differently than Tomlin. Keep in mind Brn and Bell had combined to go 3 and out in back to back drives before the hit/pick... Landry can do that.

    Exactly. Risk/reward.
