The seventh overtime game of this hyper-dramatic Penguins postseason probably should have ended a half dozen times before it finally did, with both goaltenders compelled to make dazzling saves after inexplicable turnovers by elite players who supposedly know better.
San Jose’s Martin Jones stopped Kris Letang, then Matt Murray denied Joe Thornton after a Matt Cullen giveaway, then Jones stoned Evgeni Malkin right there in the middle of the front porth, but on it went.
Finally the Sharks did something they hadn’t bothered to do in the Stanley Cup final to this point — they took a lead, and there’s no better time to do that than in overtime, as the serious hockey students like to say. When that happens, the horn blows and you win. It’s a fine tactic..........
