In the end I think this was more about AV than anything. Yeah they told Harris he could compete for the job, but he knows he wasn't given starters money, so I'm sure nothing was guaranteed or even insinuated. AV is the incumbent and it's his job to lose is the way I read this. And I don't think the Steelers expect him to lose it. I think they see him as an ascending talent with a high ceiling. And that's why they let Beachum go. So what it comes down to is do you sign Beachum at 4 mil + a year and possibly stunt the development of a player you feel can be his better in due time? Or do you sign a guy who you know is able and willing to come off the bench and has game and starters experience at both tackle positions at half the money? And that's where we're at today.

    DIRECT COMPETITION

When the Steeler signed Denver veteran free agent left tackle Ryan Harris last week, it wasn't to anoint him the starter. It was to provide “direct competition” for Alejandro Villanueva, who started 10 games last year for the injured Kelvin Beachum.

“He knows how to play. He started at left tackle. He has also started at guard and at right tackle. He will provide great competition for the left tackle spot,” Colbert said of Harris. “Whoever doesn't win the spot will provide great depth.”

Harris started all 19 games, including the Super Bowl, for the Broncos last year filling in for the injured Ryan Clady.
