The Pittsburgh Steelers worked out cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste today, per a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

As Schefter points out, Jean-Baptiste was a second round bust by the New Orleans Saints. The 6’3 corner was lauded for his size coming out of Nebraska but played in only four games for the Saints, failing to register a tackle. He was signed by the Detroit Lions in September before being released yesterday. The Steelers could be contining to update their emergency list in case of an injury. This is also the time of year when teams begin workouts with an eye on finding out who they want to offer future/reserve contracts to after the season ends.
At the 2014 Combine, he ran a 4.61 but jumped an impressive 41.5 inches in the vertical. In three years at Nebraska, he intercepted four passes and broke up 25 others.

With that size and vertical, I wonder if there's thought to signing him to a futures contract and see what he can do at safety. Then again, playing the zone, speed's not quite as important as man-on-man, provided you have a quick burst.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said it was a difficult but necessary decision to cut ties with cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, the team's second-round draft pick in 2014.

The Saints waived Jean-Baptiste on Saturday. After going unclaimed on waivers, Jean-Baptiste signed with the Detroit Lions practice squad.

"Obviously we're disappointed. You get frustrated," Payton said Wednesday.
Payton praised Jean-Baptiste early in camp, but his ongoing struggles were tough to ignore as he played significant snaps in preseason games.

"I thought during training camp there were spots where he was making some strides and yet not enough," Payton said. "When you have an investment of a second-round pick in a player like that, it's difficult to (release him). And yet we felt it was the best thing for us as a team when it came to putting together our secondary."

The Saints kept six cornerbacks on their roster, including starters Keenan Lewis and Brandon Browner and top nickel back Delvin Breaux. (Breaux will likely start in Lewis' place while he nurses a hip injury). Rookie Damian Swann, second-year player Brian Dixon and veteran Kyle Wilson are the reserve corners.

Payton strongly hinted that Jean-Baptiste could have found a spot on the roster if he had been a better special teams player and could contribute on kickoff coverage.

"Part of that is, can the guy play in the kicking game and be an asset and not a liability?" Payton said. Jean-Baptiste was always seen as a fairly raw corner because he started his career as a receiver. And his failures could prompt the Saints to reconsider their risk-taking on early-round picks.

"Obviously, you value those picks, especially those that are that early, but it didn't work out," Payton said.

To be that high of a draft pick and get cut that quickly, you've REALLY got to suck. That's worse than Ricardo Colclough. Blake is bad enough that normally I'd say anyone but him ... but probably not this time.

Like I said above, he is a recent convert to the CB position. When ? I don't know. But is it lack of experience, lack of the proper skill set or lack of brain cells ?

he was originally projected to go in the 4th or 5th round but after the Seahawks won the Super Bowl every team now was looking for DBs with size. the Saints clearly reached for him as he was just too raw and inexperienced with bad technique when it came to tackling.

however, if we can be sign him to the practice squad I think he would be a good long-term project worth gambling on...
