During the first half of last Sunday’s victory over the Browns, Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats was flagged for grabbing Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel’s facemask during a sack.

It was an ugly looking play as Manziel’s body was whipped down to the ground by Moats’s tugging at his helmet and the NFL decided that Moats’s action demanded more than just a flag in terms of discipline.

According to multiple reports, the league fined Moats $8,681 for the facemask, which he apologized to Manziel for on Twitter after the game. Manziel, who was unhurt, replied to say there were “no hard feelings.”

It’s not the biggest check that Moats will write this week. He donated $300,000 to his alma mater James Madison University during the week that the school says is the biggest donation to the school by an alumnus under the age of 30.

Moats action was unintentional, it happened in the heat of the game. It was careless, but not premeditated. The guy was looking for a sack, not a 15 yard penalty. Plus Moats was contrite in the aftermath and doesn't have a history of bad hits. Therefore he got the league minimum fine for the type of offense that was committed.

I wont get into Carson Palmer's fine other than to say it's an apples to oranges comparison.

But it's not really. A fine compared to a fine. One for a gesture...one that could have done serious damage to a human. You give Moats an excuse saying that it was during the heat of the game. You could say that Palmer's gesture was in the heat of the game. If indeed it was geared towards the Seattle fans and not his buddies in the stands. I'm not saying either shouldn't be fined, but "sticks and stones..."

Seriously hurting a human. Alleged premeditated gesture towards Seattle "fans". Bother during the heat of the game. Both fines.

Moats was pissed at himself for doing that. He knew it right after. But, Palmer's fine should have been less.

Now, if you really want to fine a celebratory "dance", Drew Stanton's sideline whatever that was, was horrible.

Actually, I'm surprised that Carson Palmer did what he did. Love him or hate him, he always seemed more mature than that. It seems as out of character for Palmer as it would if Ben did that.

Don't know, but my guess is it probably started at a flat amount, and then increases by percentage through the years and also by number of incidents. So, maybe it started at $7000 or 7500 a few years ago, and increased by a few percentage points every year?

Cost of living raise on the fines? In 2008 Ryan Clark was fined $5000 for honoring Sean Taylor on his eye black. D. Williams was fined $5787 for supporting breast cancer awareness on his eye black. Cam Heyward - $5787 for same. Devon Still - $0 for same.
