Steelers receiver Bryant inactive for game vs. Chargers

SAN DIEGO — Steelers receiver Martavis Bryant — coming off a four-game suspension for violation of the NFL's substance-abuse policy — was not active for Monday night's game against the Chargers.

The Steelers received a roster exemption and do not have to remove Bryant from the suspended list and put him on the active roster until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Bryant returned to practice last Monday and addressed the media for the first time since his suspension. On Wednesday, however, Bryant confirmed he sat out of practice with “soreness.”

Darrius Heyward-Bey will continue to play in Bryant's spot. Heyward-Bey has 15 receptions for 185 yards and a pair of touchdowns in four games this season.

Because Bryant is not on the active roster, the Steelers are not required to list him on the injury report.

Bryant was one of the top rookie receivers last season when caught 26 passes for 549 yards and eight touchdowns despite missing the first six games.

Also inactive for the Steelers on Monday were quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, linebacker Ryan Shazier, cornerback Cortez Allen, linebackers Anthony Chickillo, nose tackle Daniel McCullers, offensive lineman Chris Hubbard and tight end Jesse James.

I don't think Bryant is an "inactive" as he hasn't been officially added to the roster...?
