TOP is very important . . . when that is your game plan for winning. Cowher was a "Win by TOP" person. So, we hold the ball for 37 minutes, slow down their offense, and literally run out the clock in the fourth quarter.
Our current offense is a "Win by Piling Up Points" offense, and moreso (we hope) in the fourth quarter if necessary. TOP matters much less in that type of offense.
Of course, the best would be an offense that can run like the latter for three quarters, and then revert to the former for the fourth.
Turns out the best thing Haley did was allowing Ben the freedom to go no hudle and call the majority of the plays. The first series, the one that failed, that was Haley's calls. You know the bubble screeen and first down runs between the tackles that basically were running into the teeth of the Niners strength. Then Big Ben went off script, went shotgun, no huddle, called all his own plays at scrimmage, attacked downfield. That was Ben.That's where the success was found.
Now let's hope Haley's ego doesn't get in the way now that Ben has made this public and doesn't pull the rug out from under him as he's done before. Because while Haley helped write up the basic concepts ( not that the tenants of our offense vary greatly from any other) Ben has to be the conductor. Keep Ben free and this team will go places.

After an opening drive that featured three penalties and resulted in a punt, Roethlisberger took over and changed things by going to the no-huddle.
It wasn't something the Steelers necessarily wanted to do going in against the 49ers, but once they started and it was successful, they weren't going away from it.
“That's all me,” Roethlisberger said. “It is going and seeing something, believing it, giving you multiple options, all that stuff.”
The Steelers went with the no-huddle on 25 of their final 44 plays, and the results were impressive: 13 of 15 through the air for 280 yards and two touchdowns; 10 rushes for 38 yards and a touchdown, and 5 for 5 in the red zone.
It resulted in only 23 minutes of possession time but plenty of points.
“We want to possess the ball and we want to work the ball down the field, but what was working was the up-tempo, no-huddle,” Roethlisberger said. “I was calling almost every single play.
“We didn't possess the ball very much, but we put up points.”
