Analysis: For Steelers, making roster cuts was easy part

It's typically a grueling task for an NFL coach to finalize his 53-man roster.


For Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, it wasn't difficult at all this year, and he has Le'Veon Bell and Martavis Bryant to thank.


With Bell suspended for the first two games and Bryant for the first four, Tomlin had two roster spots at his disposal that he wouldn't have had ordinarily. That made determining the roster rather easy.


“You often spend a lot of time debating on the guys from 50 through 55, and having those two additional spots minimized that discussion,” Tomlin said during his weekly news conference Saturday.


The likely beneficiaries: undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver Tyler Murphy and fullback Roosevelt Nix.............

IMO it was easy because they couldn't fill a 43 man team with what they had. Weakest Steelers bench I have seen in a long time.

Remember when teams would line up to pick off our cuts, with a good chance at finding a starter, especially on defense? Not no more.

IMO it was easy because they couldn't fill a 43 man team with what they had. Weakest Steelers bench I have seen in a long time.

Remember when teams would line up to pick off our cuts, with a good chance at finding a starter, especially on defense? Not no more.

I think a lot of that has to do with the expansion of the league. The league is at 32 teams. That's 1,696 players total on 53 man rosters. Only 704 of those players are starters on offense/defense. That's 64 players that are either punters or kickers as starters. Now of all these 704 starters, how many are superstars? How many are average at best, and how many are just bad but start because the team is weak in that position?

The Steelers and Ravens cut James Harrison multiple times before he finally stuck on the roster, then he spent a few years riding the pine and playing special teams behind Joey Porter. The honest truth is, when guys are cut at the cut to 53, few players are getting signed to the 53 man roster anyhow. Teams are looking at their depth, seeing who's available, and signing who fits their system and their depth to the practice squads. The Steelers obviously felt that some guys cut from other teams were going to be a better fit. Truth is, most of these guys that were cut won't see a 53 man roster and if they do, they won't be active on Sundays anyhow.

I think a call to Fernando's agent is justified then. Already thin at center. Do we want another 2013 start?
