Penguins' owners looking for record $750M for team

The owners of the Pittsburgh Penguins are asking $750 million (U.S.) for the team, but face long odds of finding a buyer who’s willing to pay that much because of the flagging North American economy and uncertainty over the future of the Canadian dollar, sports investment bankers say

Currency analysts with Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in August that the Canadian dollar could fall to 65 U.S. cents before the end of 2016.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly rejected the idea that currency swings would impact the Penguins sale.

"Canadian dollar would not play into a transaction like this at all,” he wrote in an email.

The NHL’s Canadian national television revenue is worth $433 million (CAD) for each of the 30 NHL teams — roughly $14 million (CAD) per season. With a Canadian dollar that averages 90 cents U.S., that yearly income converts to about $13 million (U.S.). If the dollar is worth 75 cents U.S., the Canadian income converts instead to $10.7 million (U.S.).

Some bankers justify the steep price by pointing out other recent NHL team sales.

The Florida Panthers were sold for $160 million in 2013, Forbes magazine reported, while Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos told TSN in an interview his team is worth $450 million. The NHL reportedly wants $500 million apiece for expansion teams.

“Franchise expansion fees usually act as the price floor for team values,” Dorweiler said. “But I don’t see that happening now. In this case, even if an expansion team is worth $500 million, I don’t think that means the Florida Panthers are worth that much, or even $300 million.”

Penguins are happy with Phil Kessel. Worked with @GaryRobertsHPT this summer. Lost 13 lbs.

I'm watching the second game of the rookie tournament and the Pens are looking good in pretty much every aspect. They're moving the puck well, shooting well, getting some really good chances, great goaltending, and the defense is doing good for the most part. Every once in a while they'll leave the goalie open to shots, but other than that, they're doing a good job.

Penguins to open camp with Phil Kessel alongside Sidney Crosby

General manager Jim Rutherford said the team plans to place the high-powered forward alongside star center Sidney Crosby when the Penguins open training camp

Rutherford hopes Kessel's arrival and the return of forward Pascal Dupuis and defenseman Olli Maatta from injuries that took up most of last season will allow Johnston to implement more of the attacking style that led the team to hire him in the first place last summer.

"We'll definitely be able to open it up," Rutherford said. "We'll have a better chance of scoring more. At the same time you have to play the game the right way. You have to shut down teams at a certain time and we're still going to be able to do that."

Rutherford added Fehr is on schedule to return at some point this fall from elbow surgery and that he is pleased with the arrival of the 25-year-old Plotnikov, who left Russia and headed across the globe and play with fellow countryman Malkin.

I'll be happy to see Olli back

Maatta (shoulder) says he's regained the weight and strength he lost while battling a shoulder injury, a case of the mumps, and a cancer diagnosis last season. "All I want to do is be ready Sept. 17 when training camp starts and show the Penguins I can be the same player -- and even better -- than I was before," Maatta said.

It happened during the second period of the Penguins rookie tournament opener against Canadiens last week. Derrick Pouliot, in the rarest of moments, became angry and confronted a player. There were nasty words exchanged and a shove.

The 21-year-old defenseman is perhaps the most low-key of the Penguins, which made the incident, while not terribly violent, noteworthy.

    Mike Johnston loved it.

While sitting in the Penguins’ suite during the game, Johnston took note of Pouliot’s behavior. Johnston couldn’t stop grinning as he recalled the incident 24 hours later.

“Someone must have really done something to make Pouliot mad,” Johnston said. “That was great.”

Just a side tidbit - the NHL struck a deal with Adidas to be their jersey provider starting in the 2017-18 season.

Players love new overtime format after test run

The verdict is in on 3-on-3 sudden death overtime: the Penguins love it.

On Saturday, the club played in their final obligatory 3-on-3, sudden death OT of preseason, resulting in a goal by Sidney Crosby at 2:44 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. They still lost the contest, 4-2, in regulation.

Defenseman Derrick Pouliot called it “awesome.” Phil Kessel said it will be “fun to play.” And winger Chris Kunitz expects shootouts to be a thing of the past.

“Probably not too many shootouts are going to be coming,” said Kunitz. “We threw three forwards out there for one second and ended up scoring a goal.”

Most agreed the new format will amount to a slew of goals, and the open ice will inspire all kinds of creativity.

When you have slow and slower, Lovejoy and Scuderi as the backbone of your defense I'd put some blame on the GM too.

Meanwhile, Simon Despres is living the life out in California and they have Pouliot starting the season in the AHL. Goes without saying - frustrating.

Interesting. Reebok is a subsidiary of Adidas.

Word is that Reebok wants to get out of the hockey business and leave the hockey to Adidas & CCM (both indeed subsidiaries of Reebok.)

5 games in and Crosby doesn't have a point? A slump, bad luck, skill set slipping, a fluke? What is it?

First game this season I have been able to watch. The Caps are just beating the crap out of the Pens, and matching if not surpassing the skill level of the Pens.

Pens got the win, but only because Fleury was in full blown God mode....it was a miracle win with all the shots around the net right in his face.

Horny is the only one with any fight on this team...Sid's head is still in the clouds - we don't need him to be the one acting crazy with cheapshots and starting fights - that's not helping

Winners of 10 out of 12 now. Somehow.

Fucking Lovejoy almost blinded Fleury with his stick when he speared him in the face.

OT/SO winner - good game against the Habs - even with Malkin giving away half a dozen lazy ass passes - Kessel looked good and had some really good chances

everybody floating around in lazy ass circles on the outside seems to be their new sniping strategy

    Re: Pens Tidbits 2015-16

Olli Maatta’s Injury Should Force Trade

Third-year defender Olli Maatta was hit and it was initially believed to be either a knee or shoulder injury. However, a brief amount of time passed and there was some concern that Maatta’s internal organs were damaged, but these worries proved to be a grave overreaction by many.

There is a problem that Maatta’s injury has revealed and it’s just how thin the Penguins defense is. If you’ve watched them play this season, it’s no secret that the unit has struggled as a whole. Losing a player as talented as Maatta will hurt the team more than anyone realizes.

Kris Letang Hurt The Most By Maatta’s Injury

This season has not been one of Kris Letang’s finest. In fact, it’s has been one of his worst as a member of the Penguins. The problem that Letang is facing is that he’s essentially all the Penguins are left with. Ian Cole was used in a top-pairing role and was clearly over his head, Maatta stepped in beautifully but has durability problems and Rob Scuderi, Ben Lovejoy, Brian Dumoulin and Adam Clendening all are not top pairing defenders.

The point is that Letang has only played well with Maatta this season and now he’s out of the lineup for three to four weeks.

When asked about his plans, Jim Rutherford had this to say: At some point, I think we’re going to have to add a top-three or top-four defenseman. It’s something that we’d like to do. Do we have the right top-six guys right now? We might have to make a change there.

It’s painfully obvious that Rutherford is planning on making a move, the question is when will it happen. Additionally, it’s clear to the rest of the league that Pittsburgh will be dealing from a position of weakness and might have to overpay.

A popular name in trade rumors is St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. If Rutherford wants a top-three, or four, defender then Pietrangelo is a perfect candidate to come in and try to help Letang while Maatta is sidelined.

Is it time to start the Pietrangelo watch in Pittsburgh?
