Gay Marriage Upheld by Supreme Court

WASHINGTON — In a long-sought victory for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to same-sex marriage.

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote the majority opinion in the 5 to 4 decision. He was joined by the court’s four more liberal justices.

Great. I guess our new motto for the USA should be, "If it feels good, then do it."

Marriage has been redefined. I am not religious, but the ruling will undermine the church. The problem is there should be a division among the powers of government. Too many rubber stamps lately by the Supreme Court in support of the Executive Branch that has gone rogue.

Two people of the same sex getting married and then everybody acting like it's perfectly normal is what gets me. Guys getting plastic surgery and calling themselves another sex, but using genetics they have only become mutants. Society is enabling people to destroy their lives while they are on some kind of emotional trip.

Re: Gay Marriage Upheld by Supreme Court

The gay marriage ruling is absolutely in accordance with strict construction, which (in my apparently minority opinion) is the only thing a SCOTUS Justice should ever consider.
The Obamacare subsidy ruling, OTOH, was the exact opposite.

I applaud the gay marriage ruling, but the Supreme Court is completely off the rails now. Not a single one of them seems to be capable of reading the law or the Constitution as they are in intent or plain text.

    maybe

Scalia: Gay marriage decision shows court is America's 'ruler'

“Today’s decree says that my Ruler, and the Ruler of 320 million Americans coast-to-coast, is a majority of the nine lawyers on the Supreme Court,” he writes.

“This practice of constitutional revision by an unelected committee of nine, always accompanied (as it is today) by extravagant praise of liberty, robs the People of the most important liberty they asserted in the Declaration of Independence and won in the Revolution of 1776: the freedom to govern themselves.”

Marriage was corrupt the minute the government started regulating it, with licenses, laws and taxes.

    It’s Time to Legalize Polygamy

Why group marriage is the next horizon of social liberalism.

The question presents itself: Where does the next advance come? The answer is going to make nearly everyone uncomfortable: Now that we’ve defined that love and devotion and family isn’t driven by gender alone, why should it be limited to just two individuals? The most natural advance next for marriage lies in legalized polygamy—yet many of the same people who pressed for marriage equality for gay couples oppose it.

This is not an abstract issue. In Chief Justice John Roberts’ dissenting opinion, he remarks, “It is striking how much of the majority’s reasoning would apply with equal force to the claim of a fundamental right to plural marriage.”

And plural marriage would not be traditional marriage as defined by 1000s of years. It's another deviation by a minority trying to gain majority status without regard to historic family values and tradition.

    TD's & Beer,

I support it. Dictating who can and cannot marry really isn't the government's business. Consenting adults have the right to make stupid decisions and suffer for them.
Too many people have lost sight of the government's proper role in society IMO.

The true sign of the victory for this and the flag opponents is the corporate response. Those rainbow flag versions of logos are there because the marketing research shows that the numbers are with marriage equality supporters. True democracy there.

When was that decided? Priests can refuse to marry protestants. Slippery slope BS needs more facts to frighten.

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”

The Religious Wars have just begun

    here we go

‘Black Lives Matter,’ pastors collide with new rainbow America: ‘We will not obey an unjust law’

Coalition of African-American Pastors Threaten Civil Disobedience

Conservative African-American religious leaders stand with their white counterparts to oppose same-sex marriage—at any cost.

“If they rule for same-sex marriage, then we’re going to do the same thing we did for the civil rights movement,” said the Rev. Bill Owens, president and founder of CAAP. “We will not obey an unjust law.”

"God created marriage between a man and woman and no Supreme Court jurisdiction can define this," said Welch. "We stand clearly saying we will acknowledge God's law no matter what the cost, no matter what the price. If they want to fill jails with pastors across the nation of every color, denomination and every size who will stand for the laws of God and His truths."

"If it comes down to declining to perform same-sex weddings, that we will be charged with a civil or criminal penalty, then we will accept the penalty," said Welch. "But this isn't just about the wedding ceremony itself. This is a core, fundamental issue of our First Amendment freedom that the court is toying with right now. Either we have the right of freedom of conscience and religion and the freedom to practice it, or we don't."

I'll wait to see what the Pope says

    Statement from Michigan's Catholic Bishops

"The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is and can only be the union of one man and one woman. This union brings two persons together and, because of their natural biological composition, each bring qualities to the marriage that differ from one another. Man and woman complement each other; they then become united as one in marriage and together are unique in their ability to create new life based on sexual and reproductive differences.

Going forward, the Supreme Court’s decision to redefine marriage will have a significant ripple effect upon the first amendment right to religious liberty. It sets the Church’s teaching about marriage in opposition to the law and will create inestimable conflicts between the state and religious persons and institutions. As the impact of the decision plays out over the coming weeks and months the Catholic Church will continue to preach the truth about marriage and will promote, in the public square, this truth as what is good for society and our world."

Not really--true democracy would be if the issue had been settled by popular vote. I don't have a problem with the outcome, but it wasn't a democratic process (with the exception of a handful of states where same sex marriages were approved by referendum).

Can't really make a good argument against it. Government recognition of a domestic partnership is about property rights, and if you support the right of individuals to keep the fruits of their own labor, you should be on board with civil unions on any basis. Same sex couples, polygamists, first cousins, widowed Army buddies, hippie communes, etc.

There's an army cutting off heads because they know what God wants. Little girls are burned for learning to read because some people know what God wants. Clinics are blown up because someone knows what God wants. Whenever someone uses their special and unquestionable knowledge of what God wants to treat another group of people as lesser beings, it's a bad thing.

Married lesbian ‘throuple’ Doll, Kitten and Brynn Young from Massachusetts are having a baby

Doll and Brynn Young, from Massachusetts in the US, were dating for 2.5 years when they decided to spice up their relationship with an additional partner.

They met Kitten, 27, through a threesome’s website and the trio got along so well they all married each other last year.

The trio share a bed and have sex together and in pairs.

After undergoing IVF with an anonymous sperm donor, Kitten is now several months pregnant with the trio’s child.

The three women say they hope to challenge the stigma surrounding polygamy and show the world it is an acceptable choice of love.

“The three of us have been brave enough to stand tall and go against what society calls normal”

    Yep...

When an MTV viewer wanted to know what Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama thought of Proposition 8, a state constitutional amendment on the 2008 California general-election ballot that would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry, MTV News brought the question straight to the man himself.

“I think it’s unnecessary,” Obama told Sway, in response to a question sent in by Gangstagigz from San Leandro, California. “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage."

When the Supreme Court finds something to be a right they didn't create anything at all. All they did was stop the gov't from preventing something it never should have tried to prevent in the first place.

Re: Gay Marriage Upheld by Supreme Court

It's gonna be a long war

Churches confront new reality on gay marriage

At First Baptist Dallas, where the pulpit was adorned Sunday with red, white and blue bunting to honor the Fourth of July, the pastor called the Supreme Court's gay marriage ruling "an affront in the face of Almighty God."

The iconic rainbow colors that bathed the White House Friday night after the court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide represent "depravity, degradation and what the Bible calls sexual perversion," the Rev. Robert Jeffress said.

"But we are not discouraged," Jeffress said. "We are not going to be silenced. This is a great opportunity for our church to share the truth and love of Jesus Christ and we are going to do it."

On the first Sunday after the high court ruling, theological conservatives grappled with their new status as what the Southern Baptists call "a moral minority" on marriage. Ministers were defiant about publicly upholding their views, and warned church members to prepare themselves for a rough time ahead.

"Welcome to the new world. It's just changed for you Christians. You are going to be persecuted," Alabama's Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore said from the pulpit at the Kimberly Church of God, in Kimberly, Ala.

"Is there such a thing as morality anymore? Sodomy for centuries was declared to be against the laws of nature and nature's God. And now if you say that in public, and I guess I am, am I violating somebody's civil rights? Have we elevated morality to immorality? Do we call good, bad? What are we Christians to do?"
