Steelers top pick Dupree hoping to be quick study

Bud Dupree isn't one for humble bragging, but he's willing to make an exception just this once.
''God blessed me with being a smart individual,'' the Pittsburgh Steelers rookie linebacker said when pressed on where his photographic memory comes from. ''If I see it one time and I do it one time, I know it. I really don't have to study that much and I just stick with it. It's always been a gift I feel.''
One Dupree was forced to rely on during an eventful four years at Kentucky, where he morphed from hyper-athletic tight end to inside linebacker to defensive end to, finally, outside linebacker. Everywhere he went, he flourished. Having a 6-foot-4, 270-pound frame that can do just about anything helped. So did an open mind.

Sounds good, although I hope it doesn't mean that he'll slack off in the filmroom/classroom because he's smart.

I think we are all hoping he's a quick study...along with a couple DBs they drafted...

All indicators say the exact opposite is true. He was reported to lack instincts and have to stand around during plays to figure out what was going on in college.

My guess is Dupree will look exceptionally lost on the field this year.

Hey, nothing wrong with accepting the truth, is there?

I have read reports in several places that say Dupree lacks instincts on the field. That was the biggest knock on him.

    - Wins with athleticism of technique because his fundamentals aren’t quite refined yet; athleticism won’t necessarily carry him in the NFL like it did in college
    - Still raw at rushing the passer, without a go-to pass-rush move
    - Reportedly scored a 13 on the Wonderlic test, raising some concerns about the mental side of his game
    - Rarely gets his hands up to block the quarterback’s vision
    - Struggles to break free from blockers once engaged
    - Some scouts believe that he hesitates at times, which can lead to him being slow into the backfield

Hopefully, he will alter the trend of looking a little lost. In the NFL, you can't do well if you don't react quickly and be aware of what is going on.

I fear that instincts can't be taught, hopefully he just needs repetition and he will get it.

He started college as a tight end and was asked/told he'd be switching to defense. He had no Lb coach and was asked to take on multiple roles, kind of like a "jack of all trades, master of none" It doesn't surprise me in the least that the so called experts would say he lacks instincts. With a more defined role and an actual position coach here, I would think that'll work wonders for him. Only time will tell.

    Great thread.

Sounds like he will have no problem learning his position.

It is just how matter of how quickly he can translate it to effective play at game speed.

My guess is that he will transition and be successful but it is just a matter of how long it will take.
