Harrison will play fewer snaps this season

Linebacker coach Joey Porter said Saturday that veteran linebacker James Harrison can expect to play only about 25 snaps per game this season.
It's a surprising number, considering the 36-year-old linebacker could start at right outside linebacker.
“He knows where he is,” Porter said shortly after the Steelers drafted Miami (Fla.) outside linebacker Anthony Chickillo on the final day of the NFL Draft. “I told him already, the James Harrison (of before) is over.
“He's going to play his role, and his role is going to be effective. He knows what we're asking out of him, and he's going to be ready to answer the bell.”
Harrison, who turns 37 on Monday, had 432 snaps in 11 games last season. He had 45 tackles and 5½ sacks, which was third best behind Jason Worilds and Cam Heyward.
“Harrison is going to be a better player for us if I keep his snap count down to 25,” Porter said. “I'll get the best James Harrison I can out of him instead of trying to make him play like he was — 25–60 snaps a game.”

At 37, James is old enough to be Jessie James' father.

I will say this though, for being 37, James is in incredible shape right now. Wouldn't surprise me if he dominates early on in the season. Joey's gonna have his hands full tying to keep him off the field.

They'll say that, but let's see what happens when Harrison actually gets on the field. If he's at all like last year, he'll make it so you'd have to have your head examined to take him out of the game.

Joey Porter can say that now but let's face it, Deebo's snap count is going to depend a lot on how Jarvis Jones plays...

I'm thinking Fred Dean circa 1981-84 for the Niners. Role player but dangerous. Not an every down player but a specialist

They say this, but if he's productive...it's going to be hard to keep him away...

    This.

Unfortunately, I feel Jones will be a flop. Perhaps Howard Jones or Dupree will show something. They will need Harrison deep into the season.

I can't understand your reasoning that Jones is a flop .He did not prove to me or anyone i converse with that he was anywhere close to not being effective. He got hurt dude .

Hopefully we will not see Harrison age on the field this season. First thing he will lose is speed. He will keep his power in spurts, that's the reasoning behind the lower snap count. You also lose stamina. So he might be done by Week 12 if he played every snap. It will definitely be his last season and very interesting.

There are a lot of people that have already decided that Jones is a bust despite the fact that he was playing pretty well last year before he injured his wrist.

This year should tell us what we need to know about him.

Porter said he told Harrison he wasn't going to play an entire game anymore.

I bet they had the same plan last year

Yes, he was became injured. The games he played he didn't show me much of anything. He didn't show much of anything in college either.

Another reason is Jones may be a flop is when he admitted he will not try working out to get better. He stated he might try the gym if everything else fails.

Has he proven to you he is effective? If yes, then how so?

Seriously? Two time consensus first-team All-American playing in the SEC. 13.5 sacks his junior year and 14.5 sacks his senior year. In 12 games his senior year he had 85 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 7 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries to go along with the 14.5 sacks.

Is this what you call not showing much of anything?

I guess those 28 sacks Jarvis Jones had his last 2 years against SEC competition didn't count, huh?

No more than Tim Tebow's touchdowns as a Gator qb does.

if someone stated that Tim Tebow didn't show much of anything in college, would you say that was a true or a false statement?

No. But I would say it's irrelevant what a player did in college once he's had 2 or more seasons to show his wares as a pro.

I was responding to a post that stated Jarvis Jones didn't do anything in college.

Yes...BUT.. Tebow showed us what he "couldn't" do with two full years as a healthy pro. Jones hasn't had that luxury.

And regardless..the question posed was what did Jones do "in college".

I'm aware of all that. But I'm not interested in what he did in college or what excuses he has for his first two years. As Polamalubeast and Fan have said, this is a make or break year for Jarvis. He showed some flashes of competence as a pass rusher. But as far as holding the edge on running plays he's been a failure. And if teams are gashing you for 6+ yards every time they run around the left end it wont matter if you can mount the occasional good edge rush. Jones has been a huge disappointment so far. And his unwillingness to hit the weight room hard makes me feel that he'll remain one. But I hope I'm wrong.

I hope you are also...and there is no denying that Jones needs to get stronger at the point of attack. I still think Moats has the ability to hold down one side and if Dupree is everything the FO thinks he is....then we have a pretty NICE problem is Jones finally shows up.

I do not think Jones was good in the first 2 games of the season

The run defense of the Steelers was awful in its 2 games

Is there actual evidence that Jones refuses and/or doesn't believe in the weight room?

I think I have made it clear that I think Jones is terrible and has no upside on multiple occasions, but I simply find it hard to believe that he doesn't work out. I mean I'm sure he is no Harrison, but who is?
